allison tranny in the chevy ....
WOW drove a d/max the other day and i was impressed. it was a stocker, crewcab ( sweeeeeet ) 4x4 with allison tranny. what an awesome tranny that thing is. so smooth on the shifting. holds good back pressure with loaded trailer on downhills. man i wish the chevy crew cab came with a 12v cummins and that allison trans. just my opinion ... now be easy on the flaming boys .... scott

Yes, it is a nice transmission. Chevy took the specs from allison and built it themselves as well as using the brand name allison. So essentially allison did not actually manufacture anything for chevy. But beware, it still does have its fair share of problems. At least you dont have to mortgage your house again to fix your dodge tranny, they are pricy those allisons.

I know of several that have no problems. My wifes uncle is a tech at the local Chevy/GMC dealership and I asked him if they ever had any problems with them. He said one tranie early on that leaked and a few LB7 engines with leaky injectors but none now with the new LLY engine.

It will hold some serious grades with the engine braking feature in tow/haul. Coming back from pulls this summer it was nice to have the truck hold the gear while towing the Dodge. If you liked the stock transmission, you'd LOVE a built Allison. I longed for a neck brace.

i have a brother in law who works for GM in Lansing and gets an employee discount so has bought two duramaxes with the allison , so far has replaced tranny in both towing a 21 foot travel trailer and says he thinks he is about to replace another.
He drives em hard but they wer both low mile trucks when the trannys went out. GM warrented them ok

I need a ride in a build Dodge automatic to compare, but yeah it seems like a really nice transmission. He tows every day so it really wasn't a question if the transmission was getting replaced, but when. I like the feeling of my gut getting slammed into the back of the seat on the 1-2 shift. In Tow/Haul mode you'd swear it was a manual.

This one has the "best"(??)of both worlds.
http://www.capacitytexas.com/tj5000.html
A 152hp detuned VE pumped Cummins 6BTA 5.9L and an ALLISON tranny!
We have one here at work JUST like the link. It has the fantastic Cummins 5.9BTA coupled to that HUGE Allison. It replaced an older 132hp 6BT VE pumped Jockey w/standard tranny. (but with screwed up hydraulic systems)
Guess what??? The very first week it was put in operation, the Allison throws up and starts calling for its Mommy... Seems it lost its mind and required a complete warranty TCU replacement by the factory rep before it would even move an inch. (We had to go get the old jockey out of retirement to get our trailers moved around!)
The plant operators really like the "gazillion gear" automatic as they just have to mash the Cummins pedal and it scoots! When working, it is nice and smooth!
Granted it was an electronics problem but I just couldn't help in seeing the irony in this combination.
