96 FLHTCUI Elect.Ultra Glide Classic??

Need some Harley wisdom, looking at a 96 Elect.Ultra Glide Classic, has 21k miles stage two kit? Bike is perfect with new avons and new set of true dual exhaust. Never owned a Harley have ridden BMW's all my life. Wife doesn't go no more and I just want to try one. He is asking $12k. Is this a good year and any inherent problems with this model of bike?? Are they maintanace problems or anything major to look for on this bike? Thanks Rick

you will get a wide range of opinion on Harley's , myself I prefer the the twin cam and fuel injection. I guy at work just bought a Harley rental bike , same as the one your looking at.... 2004 model with 12 thousand miles. comes with a warranty and he paid 16500. if I were you , go check out this site and put in what you would like to know , http://www.thinkage.on.ca/~hoglist/ very knowledgable people on there to answer any question you have.

The Ultra Tour Glide Classic around here sell for about $10900 in average condition remember this bike is almost 10 years old....I always advise my customers to get a compression test on any used motorcycle and if posible get a dyno run before finalizing the sale

Thanks pappyman, I think I am going to have to pass on this one as I mentioned to the owner that I would like to have the bike taken to a local Harley shop that I know someone there and he seems reluctant, as far as price I thought it wasn't bad as it is in excellent shape for it's age as he seems to have taken great care, I made the offer and am waiting on his answer. Goodluck,,and thanks,,Rick

If they don't want a mechanic looking at it, run from the deal. That tells me there's something wrong with the bike that he doesn't want you to know about.

Yep, I did. I do not know a thing about Harley's, now Honda's and BMW's I can wrench on. A Harley is about the only bike I have not owned and the bug has me, I recently beat down the urge for a new truck and am using the bike wantitis to help get over the new truck wantitis. Thanks for the replies. Goodluck,,Rick

I had a 1995 Ultra Clasic. I put 70,000 miles on it before I sold it & bought a 2000 Road King. The bike never gave me any problems. I had a stageI kit Ran great. I Liked my fuel inj Road King better better. Wrecked it out on a country road. Almost got clothes lined by a downed tv cable line. Layed her down slid under the line, bounced off the crash bars then high sided me. Sent me flying landed on my back, broken ribs & a punctured lung & alot of road rash.

So what ever you end up with ride safe & be prepared for the unexpected.

Thanks for the advice guys. One thing is throwing me? Why the change over to fuel injection and then back to carbs? Problems with the injection systems? Or is the carbs a option on some Harley engines? Thanks Rick

In (I believe) '96, Harley started offering Fuel Injection on the Ultras, and Classics.
Carb was standard.
The early injection systems had a few "bugs".
In 2000 Harley went to an upgraded Fuel Injection system.
Starting a few years ago, the Ultra is only available with F.I.

Geezer-Glide is a FLHTCUI-A with the I indicating Fuel Injection, the -A indicating Anniversary Model.
