6-speed vs. automatic...

Debating between the NV5600 and 48RE on an '03 HO 4x4. I don't want this to get into a pi$$ing match - all I'm looking for is the difference in quarter mile times/trap speeds between like-equipped stick and auto trucks. Say, a 400 hp, 6800 lb truck. I really love manual transmissions but am not sure how much of an advantage the auto has in terms of launching and keeping boost up during shifts with a turbodiesel. Thanks!
Chris

Re:6-speed vs. automatic...

Hard too say since mine is a 1st Gen. My truck weighs in at 6510 lbs with me in it. Automatic but have upgraded to a DTT (91 %, full VB). Love the tranny. I am able to hit about 36 pounds of boost with it. During my testing, I usually brake lock it a little to get both tires spinning while in 1st, then let loose shifting to 2nd and 3rd. I spin threw 2nd & 3rd about 40 feet or posi. Watching my boost, it will stay up above 20 pounds or higher most of the way. Having my brother with me and him using a stop watch, we have gone from dead stop to 60 mph in under 9 seconds most of the time. I have never been to a track as none close by so I am sure they are not as accurate it could be. But compared to my 17 seconds when I got the truck, surely kicks some BUTT around here.

Sounds like a nice setup you got there . Have you by chance driven a manual to compare to? Thanks for the input!
Chris

No. I have never been in another Diesel from my area. Not many around here and the few that are around, are all stock. Nobody has even thought about bombing them or anything. They just assume that a diesel is slow as death but can pull your house from it's foundation. I always leave them with the website's information that I belong to and say, CHECK IT OUT. Wake that Diesel UP and get it moving. I should take a New one for a ride, but need to find one first. Local ******* doesn't carry them but will order them for you. They don't deal with diesels very much.

If your looking to drag race it why don't you get a gasser. If you really want a diesel I would go with the auto. I have more HP in my 94 5spd but the 93 auto will beat it. Not by much but it can. Now with my 4k gov kit I think the 94 will be back on top.
Just my 0.02
DM01

Re:6-speed vs. automatic...

When I bought my truck I never considered racing it. While I've owned several "sleepers", they were "looks like the family sedan, but will whoop your butt" cars. I really liked the look on the face of the guy with the 442 when he found out he got whooped by a 2.8L V6 Citation with a manual.

If you're really interested in racing, perhaps you should choose the correct tool for the job. But if you insist on racing the truck, I would go with the proven 6 speed over the unproven 48RE.

AUTO AUTO AUTO thats what i'd do if it was for quickness. The only way I can get any quickness out of my 6 speed is to powershift ( leave go pedel down and operate gearshift/clutch ) . This is VERY hard on the clutch. At around 1100 to 1300 bucks for a new clutch that will simply hold up better than stock ( not bullet proof ) the auto looks good. Throw a Little more bombing cash at a auto and you have a pretty bullet proof setup, and its QUICKER.

This is just an opinion generated from watching what people are doing and spending on their transmissions at THIS site.

good luck whatever you deciede and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Duane W.

Re:6-speed vs. automatic...

Thanks for the replies, guys. The primary purpose of the truck will not be dragracing. I'll be towing my Jeeps to the trails with it. However, after reading so much on here, dieselram.com, and TDR about how heavily some people have bombed their trucks, I was curious as to how much difference the auto made vs. the stick. Thanks again.
Chris

Re:6-speed vs. automatic...

I'd check to see what upgraded clutches were available before I got a truck I was going to BOMB. Upgrading only one portion of the drive train sounds a little silly to me, if the upgrade is large enough. Nudges here and there are different. I'm not the BOMBing type, so I got a 6-speed manual. I like to shift.

Jean
