Between those 2 choices, I'd go with the .40...But I absolutely love my .357 Sig.

When I turn 21 I plan on using a 10mm for my carry, or a .357 mag wheel gun.

I would also do the .40 over the 9.

I have the Glock 30. I like the .45. But I like going to the range when the Air Marshalls are training. That .357 Sig really BARKS!!

But you can get the .357 sig in other makes. I've shot that round out of an XD. My friend bought it on sale at gander mtn on sale for $300 right after SA starting putting their name on that gun. The ammo is probably double the cost of 9mm though.

My brother has a Croatian .45 pre XD he got for a good deal a while back. Good guns IMO.
could you point me in the direction of an xd chambered in .357 sig?

9mm or .40 are both great calibers for self defense. The .40 is probably better power wise but I will sacrifice a little power for capacity. 9mm also easier on the followup shots.

The .40 is a good "do everything" round. If you plan on target shooting, get a 9mm. If you are going to carry for protection, get a .40 or .45. At my agency, we can't carry anything less than a 40. I just went from a Glock 22 as my primary duty carry to a Kimber 1911. From a shooting standpoint, the 1911 is hands down the better gun. As far as maintenance, the Glock is, well, dishwasher safe. Shoot lots of guns and find the one that just feels best and meets your needs. And don't be cheap.

I think it's over priced but it took searching through several pages of XD's to show one in .357... Still a rare gun and high priced round at this time. You'll need to talk to a local gun dealer and see what they'll charge so the seller can ship to someone with a federal firearms license. At that price though I'd just step up to a Sig Sauer.

A lot of guns that can shoot .40 can shoot .357sig with some minor mods and a new barrel. I've seen it in a Glock too, but never shot one.

Hey Fronty here is another one. I shot one like this with a 4 inch barrel and I think it was a good gun besides being green in color .

Offer the guy something like $450... They'll usually deal on there with you me and my brother did something similar with an AK-47 recently.

Find an FFL for $40 and it'll be in your hands for around $500. Ok deal and should be a good gun for you if you like that round.

Another option is to find a good gun shop that deals with a lot of Sig products. They might be overstocked and will let something like a 229 go for around 600.
Even if it has a .40 barrel in it see if they'll swap you over to a .357sig barrel for free. They'll do it if they want to deal.
Also reman ones can be picked up in good condition for 500-600.

What are the HP's that you carry?

Even tho something is better than nothing, the only hp's I would consider when there's a choice would be Gold Dot's, Rangers, or HST's.

9mm vs 40. You cant go wrong with either one, imo.

9mm ammo is still somewhat relatively cheap. Winchester White Box value pack at wally world is around $15.00 for 100 rounds. Where as other calibers are alot more $$$$$$$$ now.

Cheaper ammo means more practice. More practice means more proficient with the weapon. In the end that's what counts. Where you put your shots, not 9mm vs 40 vs 45.

Make sure to try and handle a lot of different brands. As everyone fits and feels different. I eventually settled on an xd. It pointed way more naturally for me than other brands.

Have fun and good luck.

I carry my XD 45 and beg to differ on this one.... if you have some cracked out guy coming at you making him bleed alot isn't necessarly gonna make him stop.... however if you place a 45 round in his hip he isn't going anywhere.... but down to the ground. so what i'm trying to say is that it is about stopping power.... and about being proficient with whatever weapon you choose to carry. however I havent run into very many people that will carry a 9mm after ever having to use it. it just doesn't have near the stopping power of a 40. if those are the only two you are looking at now i would definatley go with the 40. if you are concerned about the capacity of the 40 the i'd suggest looking at a glock or XD. my XD 45 holds 13 +1. if that isn't enough then i'd highly suggest doing some target practice. good luck to you in whatever you choose.
