a 9mm slug in the fridge is just as deadly as a .40 in the fridge.
.40 has a bit more power.
9mm has a bit more capacity.
9mm is lighter.
9mm is cheaper.
.40 is technically bigger (does .02" matter?)
Personally, I carry a 9mm loaded with +P.
My next pistol, Im considering a XD40.
If you have the money, take a look at the .357Sig. Its impressive on paper, but only comes from Sig Arms.

I prefer the .40 over the 9mm...but prefer my Glock 21 in .45 ACP to both Whole different league when shooting them IMHO.
But...either will kill someone, but I just want to make sure they don't get back up!

As to the .40 to 9mm here is my take. The 9mm will get better penetration then the .40 but is less likely to cause a lot of damage (compared to the .40) as it travels through the body. .40 and .45 make big holes as they go through. Unless you hit vital organs like the brain or heart a 9mm isnt going to kill very fast. With a .40 you dont have to be quite as accurate, center mast and your good. The point of shooting someone isnt stopping power, neither bullets are going to "stop" a charging perp. They are still going to be moving forward. The point is to make them bleed a lot, catastrophic bleeding stops bad guys.

I've never had a .40, but I do have a 9mm and a .45. I'll take my .45 over my 9mm for protection. But in the end it comes down to personal choice and your accuracy. If you can get your hands on it, buy some of the winchester ranger ammo, or some of the extreme shock ammo if your worried about over penetration.

Although I have never been in the situation...
I don't think you ( or anyone) can tell the difference between the two if you are the one being shot.

I think part of the problem with the 9 is if the hole gets plugged with clothing, it won't expand and punches right through. The 40 and larger have some more shoulder if they don't expand, for better shock.

After reading all the replies,I think I'll just keep my old outdated antique .41 wheel gun.If I don't hit 'em then the fireworks out of the barrel will certaintly scare them away! But on the other hand,I do like my CZ's.

I have a pre-import CZ-75, love it though i'd rather have a later "let-down" style. Great sub $500 gun.

i have personal experience comparing the 9mm stopping power vs the 45 from my deployments over to iraq, i wont go into any explicit details, but there is nothing more aggrevating/nerve wrecking/edit when there is a terrorist who is high on adrenaline, or extremely fat terrrorist(in my case) when they get hit with a 9mm or the 5.56 it just goes right through them for the most part or lodges in their fat bodies. those high velocity rounds do good for longer distances, but when your up close and personal, their almost like shooting a BB gun. i had much more confidience in the 45 over there. we were able to get our hands on some from the iraqi army (was on a MTT in ramadi imbedded with 3-1-7 IA) i guess others in the military who have had first hand experience will chime in on this one. on another note, a desert eagle will have considerable stopping power!!! LOL
