2004 Honda Recon
My son has been saving for 3 yrs (11yrs old) and bought the Recon listed above. Its in great shape and I'm going to change out the fluids tonight and was wondering about the rear diff. Is there a check level on it or do you just fill it to the fill plug? Also, how much oil (crankcase) should it take? He's is on cloud 9 right now and I'm happy for him....he picked it up for $1200.

Oil wise, make sure to use something rated API SG or higher, and JASO MA. The MA rating is motorcycle specific, indicating the oil works with wet clutches. 10W40 for most climates.
The filter on that machine can be put in backwards, and if you do so it will block all oil flow. The Honda filters are stamped on each end as to which way it goes.
The engine is semi-dry sump, so to get an accurate oil level reading it needs to idle for about 3 minutes with no throttle, then sit for two.
Rear axle calls for 80W but any 75-W90 rated GL5 will be fine. Some Honda rear ends have a cap on the side which is also the fill level. Others have the cap on the top and a plug on the side that indicates the fill level. Check the suspension for any slop or play, paying special attention to the tie rod ends. There was a recall for tie rod ends around that era.
At that age it would also be a good idea to change out the brake fluid, check the valve clearance, and while you have the tank off there is a fine fuel screen attached to the petcock that should be removed and sprayed clean periodically. There is also an adjustment for the change clutch.
Have fun, safely! With a little care that machine will run practically forever.
