1994 4l60E trans, can i rebuild it?

I have a 94 Silverado 4x4 with a 4L60E automatic. I lost 3rd and fourth gear. When I lost it what happened was It had been slipping a little bit when it was cold, and one day, it just went to shift from second to third, and nothing was there, it just revved up like it was in neutral. Now I am a apprentice mechanic, but I dont know much about Automatic transmissions, and I've never torn into one except to change a filter. So basically my question is, are there any ideas as to what happened to it? Would a rebuild kit fix the problem? Since I have no experience in Automatics, could I rebuild it, I have a good understanding of mechanics, I am almost certain that if I had a manual on the rebuild i would have no problem. One last thing, what should I look for when I go into the transmission, for instance what to check for in the valvebody, the clutch packs etc. Thanks guys

P.S also I should mention this is my main mode of transportation.

Doubt it, unless you have been into Autos before. I can build a TH350 and would not get into a 700R4 ( 4L60/4L60E ).

I do know there is a carrier that breaks, GM has an upgrade kit, a buddy who is a local wrench has put in over 10 of them on E's.

Sunshells break but that is not your problem. You more than likely smoked the 3/4 clutch pack. They make an update kit for the 3/4 clutch and an updated sunshell. If you do go there make sure to change th sunshell, the E's break them all the time. The 4L60's are a bit harder than the dodge trannys, the 3/4 clutch can be a bit confusing. When the sunshell breaks you will not have reverse and the forward shifts will be real funny. I like doing 4L60 transmissions, but my first one was a nightmare. I had it apart twice and the pan and valve body out 3 or 4 times before I got it right.
