In and out of the Cave since 0early30. Trying to get everything squared away to start the mods tomorrow.
Off the wall question to you salmon eaters; what's the big deal about cooking salmon on cedar planks? Wife and daughter think its the thing to do. I think it's more like bbqing a possum on a piece of tupelo gum.

Should be fun after church this morning. A locally heavy thunderstorm hit yesterday right after I cut in a new driveway on a job. I think we got about 3/4" of rain in about 40 minutes. I do not like mud. woo hoo

Well, I quess I qualify as a salmon eater....Since I have a few residing in the freezer for when guests drop by (what's that thunder of truck's I hear firing up to go visit good ol' Dave???).
Salmon on a plank of cedar is a Coastal Native American thing. In my mind, you describe the taste pretty accurately. They sell those neat little packages of "official" cedar planks for an outrageous price and then make you cook your precious salmon on them, imparting oils from the cedar to the flavor.

I smoke my salmon with alder chips for a length of time, brined and prepared in ancient and secret methods known only to a few. If you want the recipe, I'll be more than glad to respond to PM requests, but you'll have to promise to not tell anyone else. I consider it secret squirrel stuff.

Mornin all

Had a Tornado watch late afternoon yesterday. Heard a couple of little twisters touched down someplace but sounded like big dirt devils. No reported damage.

Beautiful day today sun shining with a little breeze.

Shortround I have a salmon marinade which I got from my nephew, he's a chef, that is very good IMHO. He's a chef in NWDave's part of the world. When I find it I'll post it. Very good for BBQing.

Chaikwa buddy, your not that sweet that your going to melt if you get a little wet. The most that will happen is that the hair will get a little more frizzy NOT. Suck it up buttercup, get out there and get that job done. J/K

Need another pot of

Have fun and drive safe.

Been in and out. No real measureable rain up here yet. Over 5000 acre burned up "nort o da bridge" already. Real close to where my aunt just built a cottage. They have the road shut down to Paradise and taqhuamenon Falss shut down for backburning and emergeny traffic. Fire was spotted by a plane and they "guessed" how long it was burning. Good thing all this technology took over for fire towers over the years. Just checked the fax, green light is on. Cook sleep in?

crop report for monday morning for all you farmers out there.

2007 december corn 343'0 up 1'6

2007 november soybeans 861'0 up 6'4

2007 december wheat 669'0 up 5'4

corn is expected to climb as more ethanol plants are opening.

wheat will also sky rocket cause of short wheat crop this year.

U.S. ethanol hits 528,000 million gallons produced in May as of July 31 report. that is a increase of 36 million from April.

cattle and hog report so far this year

On July 12th, the USDA kept its estimate of the 2007 average steer price at 90.5 cents per pound, based on a slight decrease in production. The July 1st cattle on-feed inventory was 10.737 million head, down 1% from last year.

On July 12th, the USDA reduced it's 2007 price estimate for barrows and gilts from 50 to 49.5 cents per pound (67 cents lean), saying that prices should be helped by strong pork demand and slow production growth. The June 1st count of all U.S. hogs and pigs was 62.75 million head, up 1.7% from a year ago.

remember, if you ate a good meal today, thank a farmer.
