What's wrong with 'you people'? People say all the time it's not nice to say 'you people', but what should it be replaced with? 'You turds'? 'You jerks'? 'You idiots'?
"All you people in Buffalo are used to 12 feet of snow from one storm".
"All you turds in Buffalo are used to 12 feet of snow from one storm".
I dunno, I'm still leanin' towards 'you people'!
I guess 'you' could be eliminated in some instances, but in most cases, eliminating 'you' changes the structure and meaning of the statement. For example, I could say "People in Buffalo are use to 12 feet of snow from one storm", but that wouldn't be the right meaning if I was referring more to the group people standing right in front of me as opposed to ALL people in Buffalo in general.
Another example;
When I had quite a few people working for me, there was a time when they had a difficult time getting motivated and doing their job without me being on the job site constantly. As a group one morning I told them, "You people need to get your crap together and do your jobs or I'll find someone who will"! They DID manage to re-group, do their jobs and all was well. But how would they have responded if I'd said, " "You idiots need to get your crap together and do your jobs or I'll find someone who will"! I would think they might've taken offense to being called idiots, jerks or turds, I know I would.
So I guess what I'm asking is, what should I say in place of 'you people' that would convey the same meaning? I'll give you a scenario to keep us all on the same page;
I'm standing in a manufacturing facility, talking to a few people who are going to give me a tour. There seems to be about 1000 people performing manufacturing processes of some kind wherever I look, and I want to know what is made here that takes so many people. My question to the few people I'm talking to would be, "So what do you people make here?" I don't want the people I'm talking to think I'm addressing them specifically because I don't care what their individual jobs are right at the moment, I want to know what all these people do, collectively.
OKaaaaay... that took more time than I thought! Now I'm all tired and still feel sick. I'm goin' back to bed.
YOU PEOPLE are on your own for coffee!

MANAGING PEOPLE > HERE IS A INTERESTING SCENARIO !
I WAS THE MEAT MGR IN A SUPERMARKET > ( THIS MEANT I ALSO DID FISCAL WORK ALONG WITH THE GROUP I SUPERVISED )
#1 EMPLOYEE > A GOOD WORKER > NOT A LEADER BUT GOOD FOLLOWER
#2 EMPLOYEE > GOOD WORKER >GOOD LEADER (AS LONG AS I KEPT HIM RUNNING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION )
He CAME TO MY STORE AFTER JUST BEING RELEASED FROM PRISON > SERVED HIS TERM FOR MURDERING HIS FATHER-IN-LAW
#3 EMPLOYEE > SOME TIMES A GOOD WORKER -SOME TIMES NOT - HAD TO CONSTANTLY BE GENTLY PRODDED TO GET PRODUCTION
(SHE WAS BLACK (SHE & HER HUSBAND WERE THE HEAD OF THE LOCAL NNACP) HER HUSBAND WAS ALSO ON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS>
(I WAS REMINDED CONSTANTLY BY MY SUPERVISORS THAT IT WAS A DELICATE SITUATION )
#4 EMPLOYEE> A GOOD HEARTED WOMAN > (VERY CLOSE TO RETIREMENT AGE )
WITH ALL PROBABILITY COULD HAVE QUALIFIED FOR ASSISTED LIVING
WITH THIS CREW I MANAGED TO ACHEAVE HIGHEST PROFIT % OF PROFIT IN THE COMPANY > AS WELL AS BEST $ PER MAN HOUR IN THE COMPANY >
I CAN SAY BY THE END OF EACH WEEK MY NERVES WERE A BIT RAW
