Well started the truck up this morning and it was making a goofy noise. Sounds like PS pump, you can actually feel it when you turn the wheel or hit the brakes.
Checked the PS fluid and it is fine, just dirty. Wonder what it is? Any ideas?

When I had my 01 one the absolute bitter mornings (like today) it would be a little stiff and noisy (whiny). It always went away after complete warm up.

Never ever had a PS problem with it, and didn't really consider this a problem.

(not that this is your problem, just saying)

Scotte, how old is the PS fluid? 9 years? If so, its a good time for a flush.

Is the noise rpm related? Whats a goofy noise sound like to you? (try'in to compare your goofy noise(s) to my goofy noise(s)).

Keith, the place is called LMC Truck, they have an online catalog or you can go to thier site and request a catalog.

Scott, it was just thick ps fluid because of the cold night, makes the pump work a bit harder, and since the power brakes and power steering on these trucks are connected you can feel it in the steering and the brake pedal. I didn't think mine was gonna start this morning, took 3 times till it finally caught. Mine did it this morning too after it finally started.

Ya the noise went away as the RPM's went up. But it even did it after warm up.
How do you flush the PS anyways? It scared the crap out of me. I was thinking OK now i gotta start putting some money in the truck that's not performance related. And ya know i don't wanna do that.
Oh ya a new pump is $93 at Autozone LLW.
Anyone else other than myself and Ernie have similar problems this morning?

Mine always moans and groans when it is below 20* outside (the power steering). Goes away after warm up though. Shoot it was so cold today my thermostat didn't open until I had gone 18 miles!!! Truck reported 12* when I jumped in it this morning. Fired right up though, only one cycle of grid heaters.

My truck didn't make any noises today, maybe because I took the Jeep, and it did not want to start Looks like I might be swaping a battery in the near future.

Cold Morning Noises

My 2001 made similar cold weather groans and whines especially when making a hard right turn. Replaced the PS fluid with synthetic using a turkey baster to suck out the fluid (Took 2 tries to get most of the old stuff out) No issues even on mornings like this one!

Mine was whining a bit this morning...took the long way into work (like 20 mins instead of 7 mins ) just to let some heat build up...

it's the PS fluid like Ernie said...I was worried about this till I started researching it, seems pretty common on 2nd gens on very cold mornings. Once you drive for a while it should go away.

On a side note, last night (very cold out) I got fuel in Rockville and stopped by a Flagship Carwash nearby...bad idea since I nearly froze my hands off . I figured just a quick hose down. So I started and literally as I'm spraying the water gets onto the truck and freezes (like very thin sheeting on the panels)...it was wicked to look at that happen! I'm washing the truck and the water & soapy water is switching between 2 states simultaneously...needless to say I didn't need to dry the truck

no not selling the dodge to **** economical 750-800 miles to a tank. getting on the frozing water, all the outside pipes on my ship froze (water, sewage) broke out the heaters and water sprayed on the deck. as soon as the water hit the deck it froze and of course someone slips and bust there head on a bouy we had on deck
