A Journey from Gassers to Oil burners
Merry Christmas to you all,
I have been an avid petrol head since my eyes first opened
High Output in Diesel's got me into this.
After some homework, got a 1991 Dodge Ram350 Dually 2 door with 1st Gen 5.9B, 5 speed. Immediately stripped it down and helped my self to a few coats of Flat Black Industrial Enamel.
K&N Intake and stock so far, previous owner changed Turbo, Injectors, Lift pump, Alternator and a new battery about 8 months ago.
374,000 Kms 233,750 Mi and Speedometer broke 2 years ago, still feels like a new born
This is a great resource for anyone in the future fuel and I look forward to being a member, learning and contributing whatever i can.

Your air filter
You might want to look at ???? I think it was Duramax air filter tests from some years ago. I have it up stairs if you need. The KN didn't do very well. On trapping and holding the particles.

So I did a little reading around and sure enough, they all have stories with backgrounds and i believe the best way to find out is monitoring our own intake, turbo etc to get things in the clear. Although it is said for K&N, that adding less oil to the filter lets crap get through and adding too much oil lets the oil in. It is also said that when the recharging process is done according to the book, its one of the best filters money can buy.

I've used K&N's in gasser's in the past, with no problems at all, and I know a lot of people who run 'em in diesels with zero issues...
I prefer the Dry Flow style filters, but that's my personal preference...
You will read about people having some strange problems, that will never happen to the majority of people.
But, you also gotta remember, that some people only come here with their problems, so it seems like our trucks have nothing but problems with them, when, in reality, we don't.

Yeah, one story i heard was the filter getting sucked inside out under lot of boost pressure cant think how though.
I'd like to ask if your personal preference was formed as a result of something.
My diesel just sounds very loud, since i have changed the filter and i can almost hear a knock coming( like diesel knock) from the intake housing or maybe i am just going crazy.

Thanks for that because since i have joined the forum, i am now scared to drive 500 kms one way and then back alone which i have to in a week, thinking something might go wrong and then i would freeze to death on the side of a rural highway.

My personal preference for the dry filters is my HVAC profession, so it's not automotive based, but filtering air is filtering air, no matter what the application, from my experience.
I agree that a properly oiled and installed cotton gauze filter will do a very good job of filtering inlet air, but that opens up the opportunity for human error.
The cloth, or pleated design of the dry filters seems to do a better job of filtering the very fine particles of dust, which, over time, accumulate and sort of "bake" onto things. This design of filters also becomes more effective at filtering fine particles as it becomes dirty, while still allowing sufficient airflow, to a certain extent, of course.
As far as the noise you are hearing, you may want to start a new thread in the 1st gen. forum.
