Installing additional fuel filters, GDP w/ Cat 2 Micron, and a Fuel/Water Sep....

I have been wanting more fuel filtration for a while now. I finally decided to go with a GDP kit underhood for the 2 micron filtration and will add a BF1212 fuel/water sep between the tank and the OE filter bowl soon.

I am using a mostly GDP MK-2 + Big Line kit. I opted not to use the supplied fleetguard, or fleetguard filter base. I wanted to use the Cat 2 Micron filter and already had a Baldwin Filter base. Otherwise the kit is GDP. I am very impressed with this kit, all the fittings and parts are top quality, not to mention they will certainly reduce restriction.

I also changed the OE filter today. I am going to continue to use the Baldwin PF7977 in the OE location. It has excellent ratings for dirt and water removal.

In order to prime the new system and to clean out the rubber line I left the line disconnected from the CP3 and bump the starter and let the fuel pump run until fuel came out the hose. The OEM In-Tank lift pump may not have the most pressure.. but WOW it moves some volume. After this it started on the first crank.

I am just waiting on the local machine shop to cut me a piece of steel for my bracket to mount the BF1212, then it will go on. I am hoping to install in on Sunday. I will update with pics then.


So in the end I will have a 20 micron fuel/water sep rated for 90%+ free and emulsified water removal, a 5 micron OE fuel/water sep rated for 90%+ free and emulsified water removal, and a 2 micron fuel filter.

I got some free time and got the Baldwin Fuel/Water sep on today.

I had a bracket made that bolted to the bottom of the back bolts for the front seat. I had to replace the OE bolts with ones that had more thread. I then bolted the Baldwin filter base to the bracket and ran the plumbing. I used 3/8 compression fittings on the OEM steel line. Everything went together real smooth. I did have to take the NPT fittings from the compression fitting to the push-lok apart and reseal with thread seal tape due to a small fuel leak. But all is well now.









and its tucked up neatly above the xcase skid plate and the frame.

Well I have 14K+ miles (over 850 gallons burned, and more than that pumped) on the system with no leaks, no issues, and no change in idle pressure over the last 8K (since i got the gauge installed) miles. I don't get lower than ~5psi on stock fueling, even when towing at 35psi boost and 20K+ rail psi. No issues down to 0*F this winter.

This setup is worth every penny.

Have you changed the 2mic filter yet? Will you go with fuel pressure now to tell you when to change it?Why did you go with the Cat filter instead of the Fleetguard? Personal preference? Am I asking enough questions?

I've heard that these injectors can have problems with debris 3+ micron in size, has anybody else heard this?

(I'll just put this filter setup on the list to help me hit 1,000,000 miles )

Haven't changed it yet. I will probably change them all at 20K miles, then get a new psi reading and go from there based on pressure drop.

I went with the Cat because its a true 2um. The Fleetguard cross is a 5um and the baldwin cross is a 7um.

Bosch recommends at least 5um filtration, Dodge wants 7um.. I want the cleanest fuel I can get. An extra 5um filter costs the same as a 2um, might as well go 2um.

I am up to just over 27,428 miles on these filters (That's 757 hours, and 1416 Gallons burned, an estimated 26K-39K gallons pumped thru them). I have only noticed about a .5psi drop at WOT from when the gauge was installed with 8K miles on the filters. I will be changing the filters out at 30K miles.

Filter base

Where is a good to find the Baldwin filter base? I was looking at the GDP kit, but I really like the idea of "true" 2 micron filter.

I got mine at a Kenworth shop.

The Cat filter will fit a GDP kit, and Richard will sell the kit without a filter.

Where are you getting your fuel pressure reading from? I'm wanting to install this same filter setup and and a fuel pressure gauge.

I added my sender to the line between the Cat and the CP3, so I know what psi the CP3 is getting.

Yes they are compatible. The FF5320 (GDP Filter) is Fleetguards cross for the Cat 1R-0750.
