white smoke coming from crank case breather hose
I have had constant problems with this 2001, 2500 diesel...
I am not sure if all of the oil has come from this, but the whole front of the motor is covered in oil. The fan, radiator, everything. the problem is I have white smoke coming out of the crank case breather hose. it looks like my engine is on fire while its running. Can anyone tell me anything?
right before it started blowing white smoke, I had a massive oil leak. probably dumped all 12 quarts in 30 minutes of running. The mechanic said my dip stick popped off/came loose from the motor???. he didnt charge me anything and fixed it for free. ever since then, I got the smoke. I dont notice any driving problems at all, but I am worried something is majorly wrong.

Sounds like a blown piston or head gasket to me. Compression getting into the crankcase.
Is it running rough? If so you can loosen one injector line at a time to see which cylinder is at fault.

well, I caught it before it ran dry. So I am not thinking that was the damaging point. however, it seems I have had many cases of running low on oil. I had a service station not tighten the oil filter and lost it all that way once.
in response to the blown piston or gasket. I really dont notice it running rough, or any loss of power. but that sounds like a good start.
thanks for the responses.

With it idling you can pull the oil filler cap off to watch for smoke - loosen one injector at a time to "short out" that cylinder, and see if it affects the amount of smoke coming out. This may be a way to isolate the cylinder if it is just one causing the problem. It would give you a better idea of what to look for if you have to pull the head or engine.
