what's the racket?
Im stumped? Was driving 2 weeks ago pulling fltbed trailer empty and as i got on the freeway It sounded like my tranny started to grind and when I turned around to head home it started to clunk/ rattle mostly in 3rd, 4th, 5th. I assumed the tranny (getrag) My getrag went out on me a year ago and i had it rebuilt and Id heard so many bad things that I assumed this time it was the tranny again. So I ordered a rebuilt nv4500 and the conversion and I just finishe d putting it in everything went well clutch looked ok. got it all done and went on a test ride and the thing made an identical sound!!! clunks under load mostly in 3rd 4th 5th doesnt make noise if i push in clutch and doesnt seem to make noise going downhill. sounds just like it's in the tranny. could it be the np205 transfer case? any Ideas. Looks like i have a nice rebuilt getrag for sale. thanks

I assume you ruled out the shift linkage for the transfer case. That gets loose and will allow the slider to slip up and bang a bit.
If it is not the shift linkage, it then depends on the model you have as to if you have a rear carrier bearing or not, but if so check it and the rear universal joint. Also, take the time to check your front universal joints and the joints in the ends of the steering axle.
If the problem is not in one of those locations, the best bet is to jack both rear wheels off the ground and put the NP205 in 2WD high, and the transmission in neutral. Then spin the rear wheels and listen for the noise.
The NP205 is an all gear design, and if the gears get excessive end play they will make the noise you describe, but only under a nearly no load condition. You will be able to repeat the condition by spinning the rear wheels one way then the other, as that will cause the gear with the excessive play to knock as it slides first one way then the other. The good news is that if this is the problem, the fix is under $50 and nearly any good gear shop will have the parts you need.
Regarding the Getrag, once rebuilt and then run overfull with oil they are nearly indestructible. The original problem was a too low oil fill that allowed excessive wear.
