VP44 CRAP!!! need some advice

I am in the middle of replacing a VP44 on a friends truck. I was removing the puller from the gear after the pump was removed. The gear seemed to move quite a bit and now i dont know if it can acctually jump time with the cover still in place or not. Can some one please help me with this so i can put the pump back in this thing...or am i going to have to pull the fnt cover to get the gear back in time? I just dont see the gear having that much play and comming free from the other gear. And the directions and people i taked to never said anything about moving the gear....so i dont think its a big deal. Thanks!

I'm giving you a bump for those who look at the most recent posts. Anyone?

Isn't the shaft for the VP a keyed shaft? If it is, you should be able to line up the keyway from one to the other.
