violent clunk in park after 2-3 seconds
Hey Guys,
A new one has popped up on me. This is a interminent problem that seems to be more prevalent when it sits for a few days. I start my truck...2-3 seconds later I hear a loud violent clunk. Seems to work alright after that. Does not sound healthy. Any ideas? starter hanging, TC. Since I have not put it in gear it must eliminate a bunch of stuff. Help me! ??? ??? ???

Do you start the truck with the A/C on?
Mine will do that if I forget to swich to vent before shutting it off the previous night.
Even if I start with the A/C off, but turn it on right after starting the truck, I'll get the clunk.

AC has be on when I start it. The Midwest is burning up right now! It sounded much more violent then a compressor turning on...but worth a try. I will give that a try. I hope thats all it is!
Thanks

Re:violent clunk in park after 2-3 seconds
I have changed my trans filter and fluid within the last 5,000 miles. Used no additives...straight Chysler ATF +3. Transmission was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. It has been fine except I needed to ajust the tv cable and occasionally it feels like it is starting in second gear. Usually when it sits. My biggest fear is the tc is going out again. This was my original problem. The tc has been replaced and trans gone completely through. Still stock though. Saving $ for an aftermarket. Well?
Thanks

The reason it feels like it is starting off in second gear after sitting for a while is cause all of the fluid drained from the TC. My truck sat for a week without starting, and when I got in to start it, I put it in gear and the truck didn't even move. I popped it in neutral to let some fluid pump through it and low and behold, when I put it back in drive, it worked just fine.

Re:violent clunk in park after 2-3 seconds
Hello,
It seems like it was probably my AC being on caused my clunking problem. I love my truck but it has some peculiar oddities. If it has sit awhile I need to put it in neutral, and circulate the fluid or it will slip or feel like it is taking off in second gear. I need to remember to disengage overdrive at RPM's below 1800, and now I need to remember to turn off the AC before I shut the truck down. I'm getting to old to remember all these details ???. Oh...I'm just kidding, it is a great truck! I'm kinda a creature of habit, I'm just worried about the wife remembering, when I do let her drive the truck. This a great forum. Better than any service manual, and or a great supplement to the service manual.
Thanks guys,
BLH1960
