valve? Lifter?!??
I Heard what only could be described as a whooping sound reverberating back through my air filter.
Did some looking and found my #4 exhaust valve had about 1/4" play.
adjusted it up and everything sounds ok.
Had a look and the push rod did not seem bent or worn. the rocker arm looked good. There seems to be good up and down travel of the rocker arm which seems to tell me the cam is not worn, although i'm sure i couldn't see a few thousandths with the naked eye.
the adjuster seems out of whack from the other 11 so i seem to think something is wrong down in the engine, a collapsed lifter or something.
I would apprerciate any help.

Did you pull the push rod up out of the engine and look at it or just twiddle it in the engine? Bent push rod is the most likely culprit. Also you might want to check the amount of play the rocker has on its shaft compared to the others, there could be a worn shaft or rocker causing the problem.
The tappets are solid and can't collapse, so if the problem isn't with the stuff I mentioned, you're in the market for a cam.

Was the adjuster lock nut tight or on loose side? The adjustment may have backed off (loosen) if the nut was loose. I talked to a guy who had this happen to him following an adjustment job. The dealer mechanic didn't tighten the nuts suffficiently.

these come from the factory on the outer limits of too loose.....so mabe that was it. I would be inclined to put a dial indicater on it and see what your lift is to see if a cam went flat

The adjuster wasn't loose, and now it seems to be screwed down so much further than the rest of them.
Doesn't seem like there's an easy fix anywhere, I'm gonna have to bite the bullit

What was the short history just before your problum, your thread implies that it happened out of the blue, without more info and I am new to these engines but a
nouther possiblity the rucker stud might be pulling out .

Are the rocker studs press in or screwed in. I have seen manny gassers pull press in studs, however most cases involved larger cams with heavier springs.
I agree with thumper 549 get a dial indicater on the rocker and compare it with the other exausts before doing anything else.
