turn over and no start - ether added and started

We ran the truck for about an hour doing work around here. We shut it down and took a break. half hour later, we got a fire call and raced to the fire house, parked and shut down. after a half hour got back in and turned the key. all it did was turn over with no fireing. We cracked injectors and had fuel at them. After alot of thinking we shot ether in the air filter and boom. it started. went and filled the tank and went home. parked it in the barn, and shut down. Tried to start and nothing?

Injectors?
VP44?

Whats your fuel pressure like? Could be a lift pump, or possibly a crack in a line so that your losing prime, but you'd still have some fuel at the injectors to leak out. If it is your VP it'll cost you big, so check all the little things first.

Mike,
I'm guessing you have 13 lbs of fuel pressure, so we can say the lift pump is operating.
From you first post I gather that it won't start back up right after you shut it down. Is that correct? That is not typical of an air leak, I have one and it takes several hours, sometimes all night to leak down, haven't been able to find it yet, in the morning I have to bump the starter so it pumps fuel and gets the air out.

I would try to find someone with a smarty or a scanner and scan that thing for codes, see if there's any in there.

Have you ever put a VP on this truck yet? The no start situation after it was running makes me lean towards the VP.

It's hard to say since it started with ether and continued running. Sure sounds like an air leak.

Got a frantic call from my brother 3 weeks ago.... It just died at the stop sign 3 blocks from my house. Engine would start with only either but not keep running.

No once started it kept running, and no off/on like the vp44 going. it is the original vp tho. We disconected the grids before using ether. bumping the started after cracking the lines got fuel to the lines(it acted like it had air in it) but that doesnt help, cuz even with fuel at teh injectors its still not firing, just turning over

Isn't there a reurn regulator somewhere. Could the return side be allowing the fuel to leak down?
