Turbo End Play

I was just talking to a friend of mine who has the same truck as I do (01 CTD) and he mentioned that if he grabs his turbo fan it moves side to side 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, So I went and checked mine and it doesn't seem to have any movement side to side at all. Is this normal in both cases or is something wrong with one of them?

Re:Turob End Play

If your friend can move his turbo shaft that far sideways he had better start looking for another turbo. I called Piers at Piers Diesel Research a while back and he told me that a little end play is ok, but there should be NO movement side to side.
Tom

Re:Turbo End Play

Actually, end float or movement along the axis of the turbo shaft is NOT GOOD . Specifications for turbo rebuild on that clearance is less than 0.005". Radial clearance or perpendicular to the shaft can be up to 0.015" I think (don't quote me) but 1/8 of an inch is a problem.

If you can pull or push the shaft in/out enough to feel it, its done, side to side is OK..

J-eh
