Truck won't start - [NOW FIXED]
Greetings to all who read -or- reply,
I'm back from a long "work" trip here (Some of you may have an idea about where I was...) and I've recently had a problem with my 1999 QC 4x4 3500 CTD.
This morning I went to start my truck and It cranked for a split second before it went "clunk" and then NOTHING.
I had my timer set for 3am on the block heater, and It was 5:45am when this happened. It's about 15 degrees out this morning.
The truck has been sitting for a couple of months while I've been gone, but I suspect that sitting has nothing to do with this problem. The past couple of days since i've been back the starter has been turning over for a second and somewhat "missing" or "clunking" one small time before the truck starts up. Kinda like a little burp each time, but very slight and almost un-noticeble.
All of the fuses and other items in the engine check out fine, it just won't turn over. Tried to shift between neutral and park a couple of times to check out that safety switch, but nothing still.
Question #1: Is my starter "Dead"?
Qestion #2: Does my 100,000 mile warranty cover this? (the truck has 62,000 miles on it now, and I bought it used.)
Thank you in advance for any information you may have.

Re:Truck won't start - Warranty question
i guess i would check fuses.....do you have power to other things like radio??lights on the dash or is your dome light dim??if so...mayb a dead battery and it does have enough juice to crank these motors over...that is why there are 2 batteries....that is waht i am guessing it is...especially if it has been sitting outside for 2 months in the elements...but to check fuses..there are fuse boxes on the drivers side in the cab as well as on the fender well on the driver side....keep us updated.

Re:Truck won't start - Warranty question
I would venture two guesses as to your problem,
First, yes maybe the armature inside the starter has a bad spot in it, which would mean you need a starter.
Second, the starter solenoid contacts in these starters are known to be a problem. Assuming that your key switch is working properly, batteries and cables are all in good working order, I would definitely take a good look at the starter.
As for this being under warranty, that would be something that the dealer would have to answer. You being the second owner, I cannot answer that. Was the warranty tranferrable to you when you bought the truck, and does it cover the starter? Call the dealer and ask.
Hope this helps

Rich

Re:Truck won't start - Warranty question
I fixed it.

I went to the ******* a few min. ago and they told me that the starter isn't part of the engine warranty. (go figure)

I did some troubleshooting on my own by using the old fashoned screwdriver on the post's of the starter, and the truck started right up! I then took the starter relay (from inside of the plastic box/eng comp) and hit it on the ground a couple of times, it now starts right up. I figure that the relay was worn and hung up. I'll go to the parts house and get a new relay to stick in today.

Whew, I was scared for a second that I was gonna have to shell out $200 smackers for a new starter... (I'll have to tell my wife that it was HUGE repair that cost $80 or so, that way I'll have some beer money! )

Thanks for the info that you gave me, let this be a lesson for future readers.

Cheers,

Pete

Hey Pete, welcome home. Don't you just hate those long "business trips"? I'm glad I don't have to do those any more. Just wanted to say thanks for what you're doing. We do appreciate it.

~Dave
