transfer case woes
I have a friend that has a 96 2500 automatic w/4wd. He just returned from a trip to Wyoming hunting mule deer. On the way back his transfer case started making a chattering sound. If he applied a little pressure to the transfer case shifter, the sound would go away. Last night it made the chattering sound a lot louder and then made a loud POP. Truck is now no-go and had to be towed to his house. The 25 dollar question I would like to ask is: Does the transfer case have a chain drive, a belt drive or is it gear driven? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gary

Yeah, it's a chain, but the chain only drives the front output as far as I know. While I wouldn't drive fast at all with a broken chain, can't see why it would stop you.
