Strong rotton egg/sulphur smell
Ok so 1 have one bad battery(pass) in my truck and my second battery(driver) needs to have a charger on it at night so itll start the next day (is going bad quicker than id like). Well this has been goin on for about 3 wks as i havent had money to buy batteries.
Anyway, today i go out to go somewhere, start my truck and take the charger off it. I smell a rotton egg/sulphur smell emitting from the drivers side battery. I have smelled this some in the past week but not nearly as bad as today. So i go ahead and make my arrends. I stop at one place to run in and leave my truck running. I come out 5-10 min later and my cab is FILLED with this rotton egg/sulphur smell. Ive never had this happen yet, and everytime i stop for a stop light or stop sign i smell it as soon as i start to go again. When i got home i shut the truck down and opened the hood and stuck my nose down by the drivers side battery at the corner of the "cap" on top of the battery. I could smell a VERY strong rotton egg/sulphur smell coming from that.
What is causing my battery to make this smell and is there anything i can do to stop it.

My guess is that it is overcharging due to the other bad battery. It is trying to charge a battery that won't take a charge and in the process it is boiling the other one and it will quickly fail also. Yo really need to find the moneyand change both batteries soon.

NO YOU NEED TO REPLACE THEM NOW!!!!!!!! They are getting ready to possibly explode. Stop playing with them and replace them they are very dangerous and can hurt you, blind you or KILL you. One spark with that and boom you have a mess and damage to you truck at least and injury to you.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
I"l be on the road, but nowhere near Iowa so I should be safe from you. At least figure which is bad and take it out of system. If other is anywhere close to good it will start on one battery. Don't clamp the terminals together from the bad battery.

We would get this issue at the Nissan Dealer I used to work at. They had a car pusher with about 4 truck batteries wired in parallel. When the batts ran down, we would stick it on the charger overnight.
Now for the issue: When whoever hooked it up, they didn’t see what the setting of the charger was set at. They left it up on high amp/Start all night long….needless to say the dealership was not happy with the smell the next morn….PLUS the chance all that hydrogen gas could cause issue…...the batts were shot and had to be changed out. (What setting did you have your charger on? Should have been the lowest setting: 2A on most)
Do what has been suggested……get them changed now….this has made itself a priority for you at this point……

That smell is Sulfuric Acid. Your battery is ruined. They must be replaced but first of all you need to ensure that your truck will not overcharge the next batteries either.
Be careful because your battery will be so hot it will almost melt the case.

i just had this problem. my secondary batt."pass side" blew up. when i replaced it the truck still wouldn"t turn over. so i swapped the batterys and the truck fired right up, but the alt. didn't cycle. so i replaced the alternator after tresting the fuse inline cable, the pcm power feed to alt, and alt. output. it was like 276 for the alt.
