Don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem but when using the cruise control I hear a strange rattle in the cab coming from the engine compartment. When I tap on the brake to disengage the cruise, the rattle quites. Is this a vacuum leak or speed control sensor problem?

 

Wild Guess! could be you are missing something in the throttle linkage, like a spring to keep everything snug.

 

Try looking at THIS. My 99 had a rattling sound when the cruise control was on and I could take my foot and lay it against the pedal to make it stop. I finally went under the hood and started moving some linkages around a little,,,,, it ended up never doing it again. Not sure if I moved something just enough to stop it from vibrating or what? I'm just glad it stopped that agrivating rattling.

 

Thanks for the info RATTLINRAM, that sounds like it might do the trick.

 

If you have a servo-actuated cruise control, the accelerator pedal linkage is slack when the servo is modulating the "throttle". The rattle is probably coming from the slack in this linkage.

I found this TSB in regards to this rattle.

Models: 1998 BR/BE Ram with 24 valve Cummins engine (ISB)

Note: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with the 24 valve Cummins diesel engine (sales code ETC)

Symptoms:

An audible buzz from the accelerator pedal when cruise control is engaged.

Diagnosis:

Road test at highway speeds - set cruise control and listed for buzz from the pedal. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FOOT TO TOUCH THE PEDAL ONCE THE CRUISE IS ENGAGED. Once the buzz is heard, apply light pressure to the pedal to verify if the buzz is dampened. If the conditions occur, perform the repair procedure.

Repair: The procedure consists of re-routing the accelerator cable and installing a cable routing assist clip.

1. Remove cable/lever/throttle linkage cover (fig 1), by removing two phillips screws and prying out the two push tab retention clips. Then pull the cover to release retaining tabs and remove cover.


2. Using two screwdrivers, pry the cable connector socket from the throttle lever pin ball stud (fig 2). CAUTION: BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT BEND THE THROTTLE LEVER ARM.
3. Squeeze the two pinch tabs on the side of the accelerator cable at the mounting bracket and push the cable rearward out of the bracket.

CAUTION: BE CAREFUL TO NOT KINK THE ACCELERATOR CABLE IN THE NEXT STEP.

4. Carefully bend the plastic cable conduit as shown in fig 3. The conduit should be bent so that the cable routing assist can be snapped onto the accelerator cable conduit near the dash panel (fig 4). The routing assist should force the cable to route toward the center of the engine compartment (fig 3).


5. Route the accelerator cable inboard of the engine-oil dipstick and insert the cable through the mounting hole on the cable mounting bracket (fig 2). Snap the cable into place ensuring the two pinch tabs are released.
6. Using large pliers, connect the cable end socket to the throttle lever pin ball stud

CAUTION: TAKE CARE TO NOT DAMAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE ATTACHMENT.

7. Install the cable/lever/throttle linkage cover onto the mounting bracket. Attach cover with the two phillips screws and the two push tabs with the retainer clips.

8. Verify that the accel pedal moves freely, reroute the cable as necessary until accel pedal moves smoothly.
