stranded in sioux falls, south dakota

ok so heres my deal. i just finished school and am headed home from michigan towards mount shasta, california. long story short, my rear axle seal is leaking and i just got it replaced the day before i left , which pretty much screws me. Also, i noticed that some oil was dripping from my engine on a gas stop. i opened the hood and found that 3 out of the 4 bolts to my AFC housing were gone!!! Holy crap!!! I managed to replace those with some grade 5 bolts, lock washers and medium grade locktite... but i still need to find a shop around here to fix the axle seal.

I am almost positive that it is the axle seal. i checked the brakes and the resivoir, which was full, thereby eliminating the fact that the brakes were leaking, so the only other thing that it could be is the axle seal right????

does anybody know of any reputable shops in this area??? I can limp around by refilling my diff with gear oil every so often to get somewhere, any help would be greatly appreciated.

be sure to make sure you axle breather tube isnt plugged up. that would cause the failure or a new seal

I had repeated rear axle seals in my chevy PU, I changed tires, rims, bearings, Finally checked axle shaft for straightness, BENT. Got junk yard part(checked straightness), installed, changed oil soaked brakes, and no more problems.
Just something to look out for. you don't want it to get seal fixed, only to have it go out again.

My girlfriend says "I don't know what happened". She drives it daily.

Hey Beachboi! I live about 130 miles west of Sioux Falls. Which way are you headin back ? Are you goin west on I-90? I can help ya out if your comin this way. I would check the breather. You can put oil back in the rear end and drive it. Even tho it is leaking , chances it wont leak it low enough to hurt anything going down the road. How bad does it leak? Is it throwing enough out to keep the inside of the wheel wet all the time and throwin it around on the truck or is it just gettin dirty and and a little oil on the wheel? Let me know.

thanks guys for all the quick replies. i checked the breather tube and its working fine, so that eliminates that option. Andy, my02CTD is going to help me out. he know of some good shops around here so tomorrow i will get the seal fixed and hopefully be back on the road

roughstock, I talked to one of my buddies who is a mechanic and he also suggested a bent axle. i really hope that isnt the case...

mikmaze, lake siskiyou has been filled up for a while now and i havent really heard otherwise. there arent any caverns up there. are you talking about shasta lake? thats where the boats and waterskiing is, as well as the caverns. the city drains it every season so the water level fluctuates constantly.

once again thanks for all the swift replies.

Hey guys. I met up with Beachboi this afternoon. He checked his rear axle 2x on the way out here,150miles, and no fluid loss. It is leaking but Im wondering when he check the breather that it may have had something plugging it and when he check it it opened up. It wasnt wet when I looked at it. I had a nice visit with him and his girl friend . He is really into the cummins so Im sure he is goin to do great. Hes got some ideas he is goin to do with his truck so keep your eyes open for him. I saw that 12 valve in his truck and made me wish I had mine back ! He will keep us posted on what he is goin to do. Great guy . Hope the rest of his trip goes ok. I wish them the best.
