Sticking Brake Caliper
I know the 2nd gen 4x4s are notorious for having front brake problems and I guess Im finding that out first hand :'(. I have been having brake troubles for some time now, Ive been getting 5 months wear out of my front brakes, especially the front right. Well anyhow I replaced the brakes less than 30 days ago and already the front right is GONE . I tested to make sure it was dragging and sure enough, it will hardly spin at all by its self when its jacked up and its dragging big time .
What I was wondring is do I have to buy a whole new caliper or is there someone out there who has had the same problem and fixed it? If so how?
Thanks
Wheels

Before you replace any calipers, check your brake lines. Jack it up and spin the tire, notice how it turns. Loosen the bleeder screw and then spin the tire again. If it spins free you need to replace the brake line. Sometimes a brake line will collapse inside and cause your problem.

Chris

Good point Stamey. Seen it happen more than once. dsljunkie, reman calipers are one of the best deals on the aftermarket. Check on a "loaded" caliper, complete with new pins, pads and all that good stuff. At least your only getting pads for one side.

Personally, I don't do anything to one side that I don't do to the other. In other words, if I replace parts on one side, I replace them on the other also. But that is just the way I do it.
Did you lightly grease the caliper slide surfaces and the pins?

Re:Sticking Brake Caliper
On the newer ABS brakes, it is always advisable to replace or rebuild the calipers at each pad change.

What happens is the pistons now wear much more rapidly on the sides that they did in yesteryear, and then do not run true in the caliper bores after about 30,000-50,000 miles. On rigs used with heavy stock trailers operated in mountainous areas, expect the pistons to wear enough to cause binding at about 20,000 miles. This is due to the nature of ABS braking and the rapid pulsing that is done by the computer when you depress the pedal.

Worn pistons then cause the caliper to bind and apply the brake pad pressure at odd angles.

Also follow the posted advice posted about using the pin lube, even on new calipers with replacement pin kits. It is also necessary to check the cast slides on which the caliper rides, and be certain that they are clean and smooth.
