Squeek tonight

Today on my way home from work in my 96 after about 15 mins and 3 mins from my house I heard a horrible squeeking noise when I applied the breaks. I pulled out front of my house and my dad came out to listen to me move my truck around. He said the sound is coming from the front driver's side wheel. I am obviously thinking breaks but they were new in December. I'm going to call a garage in the AM. Any other maybe's? Bearings?

Thanks, Jeff

When was the last time you hosed off your brakes? If mine get dirty, they start to squeak. I hose them off and they work fine again. Usually works for about a week.

Drove to the garage today to get it looked at. It was raining and the streets were wet. Just before I got to the garage it stopped and I can't get it to squeek anymore???
He said it was raining outside and they STOPPED squeaking. Mine only squeak when they are dry or have rust on them.

Re:Squeek tonight

You said you replaced the brakes in December but have you actually checked and seen if they are still OK? A bad pad could have worn down to the tell-tale by now. Or a sticky slide could cause abnormal wear. Did you lubricate the slides with a high temperature anti-sieze when the pads were replaced? Many years ago a girlfriend of mine called to say that on the way to work her car started to squeek badly. She took it to one of the local chain brake shops and they told her that her brakes were badly worn and dangerous and not to drive her car any more. She called from the shop. Knowing the car I told her to keep driving. That evening I checked and found a small pebble lodged on top of one pad and rubbing against the disc. By the way, her brakes had about 70% life left. This shop tried to take advantage of a female in trouble.

Re:Squeek tonight

There could be the possibility of worn brakes even as new as they are. I replaced mine in November and had to replace them again last month. The reason, my calipers hung up and prematurely wore the brakes out. Replaced calipers and pad and everything's just fine here. ;D

Chris
