Rear Axle Lubricant/Seal
I have a 2002 Quad cab 4x4. It has 4.10 rear end gears. The driver's side axle seal is leaking so I am in the process of replacing it. My question is what gear oil do I replace it with? The owner's manual says 90W. I called the dealer and he said 90W synthetic. I have not found 90W synthetic. I have found 75W-140 sysnthetic. What is the best oil to use in the rear end. It has a Dana 70 rear end. Also, what size socket do I need to remove the axle nut? I think it is 2.5 or 2 9/16"? This is my only vehicle at this time.
Thanks

You need a 2.5" axle nut socket , a regular 2.5 socket will be way too thinck to fit in.
Just fill it up with 90w, that's what the manual calls for. If you have a LSD rear end , you will need to grab a bottle of the friction modifier from the dealer , they should know what you need.

Well buddy if you need the job done in a jam, this is the way to do it.
I simply used a chisle and a sledge hammer to get the nut loose( over the holidays and no places open and not a socket to fit it). My Dad and I done this, He has done it since his late teens on coal trailers, and they have never came loose. I did not have the right tools to install the wheel seal, so I used a landscape timber, and they dont leak on me. Also, when tightening the nut, tighten it down all the way(tight as possible) then back it down to where the hub can spin freely. Then insatll the locking little key and put some gasket sealer on the hub along with the new axle gasket and she should be good to go. I honestly would not reccomend this to someone who has never done it before!!!!!!! but it will get you out of a jam
