Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
I run 295/75's on mine w/ 4:10's. At 2000 RPM I'm at about 64 mph. The best I've ever got was around 17 mpg. Typically I get 13.5 mpg.

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
I have 3:55s, and a 5-spd. on 285 tires. I used to get about 18 combined, but now that I slid the stock plate forward, I get about 14 or so. And lots of smoke on all starts off the line, unless I just barely press the accelerator. I was hoping to get better mileage than this! I was told bumping the timing up to 15.5* or so would help mileage. Any thoughts?

Cumminsdude:

You may want to run a tank through with an additive to clean things out. I've been running Power Service and was where you were but now am at 17 - 18, mixed city/highway, 4.10, 4X4, stock tires. I also had my fuel pressure checked. It was low because of a bad overflow valve (also caused lower power). Check your fuel filter, prefilter also. Try those things then recheck mileage. Good Luck.

Paul
Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
well, I thought I was doing ok till I read this and nowI wonder. 2001, 3500 4x4, 3.55, stock tire size. Running empty mostly interstate (100 limes a day, only 6 are off the interstate) 65-75 I am getting about 17.5 avg. Like I said, thought that was not bad but now am thinking that I could/should get more. Truck runs great (I think, it's my first diesel) Have been running Power Service since I got it 3 weeks ago, think I should change the fuel filter since I don't know when it was changed last? I'm still working on the gauges (the finance manager at home has limited spending for now) so I don't know what the pressure is but it does not smoke EVER, not even taking off hard.

thanks for all the help, not directly to me, but reading the site has answered most of my questions/concerns.
Also I am changing my oil soon so I am doing my fuel then also. Whats the prefilter? And my truck goes in tomorrow to the shop so they can look at my steering and I will ask if they can check my fuel pressure. Thanks for all the help, EVERYONE!!!

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
I get 19 MPG EASY unloaded with snow ***** coming from the dash, ;D ;D momma rapped up in a blanket complaining about the cold, and asking "ARE WE THERE YET", running 70 mph is about 1800-1900 rpm, 2000-2100 will get me about 73-74, but I've got a bad habit of flooring it to get there faster, even driving like I was 20 again, the worst I've seen is 15 1/2 mpg. If I feel the need to get muddy, we put the CJ-5 on the trailer and go to the woods and act a fool, 4 wheelin ain't needed on the streets here, unless tarffic ain't moving and ya gotta go pee

I run BFG's A/T 295/75R16's on my truck.

5-sp 3.55 rearend. I avg about 18.4-18.7 mpg on the last 2 tanks.

I avg'd 19.5-21.2 mpg with Michilen 265/75R16 LTX A/S tires before the tire change.

Just a point of reference for you but looks like your truck may be running a little low on MPG however CTD's vary a lot per driver and setup.

-CM

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
My average is about 14mpg around town and 20mpg on the highway on a trip. I am usually running speeds of 75 to 80 mph. I made a trip to Louisiana and set cruise at 68mph in Virginia and averaged 24mpg.

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
Well guys I just changed my oil and fuel filter and the fuel filter was pretty black. I have no idea what it is supposed to look like but maybe this will help. I have about 3/4 of a tank of fuel left so I will calculate when I refill and if it helped it should balance out.

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
Ok heres what I have done. Did oil change, cleaned the IAT(wasn't noticably dirty) new air filter, and drove it like I stole it. combination city and highway 16.3.
can't reall complain about that.
The dakota r/t only got 13.9 with an egg on the throttle.
Now I have a real truck that gets better.

Re:Poor Fuel Mileage
Before I traded in my 01 1500 5.2 5 spd 2x4 I used to get 12 or so when I drove it like I stole it and 15-16 when I drove more conservatively, now with my 01 3500 dually auto with 4:10’s I get on average 16.5 that’s hauling *** on the highway (usually put 100 miles a day) at 80 to 90 mph. At those speed I’m usually around 2500 to 2800 rpm. Just my 2cents
