OH CRAP!!!
I have heard some of yall talking about losing 5th gear in the 2nd gen trucks.......well I did. I was on my way to WV and about an hour away I was cruising at 70 and all of a sudden my rpms shot way up and my truck acted like it was in neutral. Well seein as I had an hour to drive I shifted into 4th and drove the rest of the way there, and back. Just got back and need to know excatly whats wrong, and if it is that nut or bolt or whatever backed off can I fix it myself or is it gonna cost big bucks??? Help me!!!

Farmboy,
This is a pretty common but still annoying problem. Im not sure whether you can fix it or not...dont know your mechanical skill - that is your call.
You can go a couple of routes:
1) put the stock nut back on with red Loctite - not recommended
2) upgraded/updated lock nut - OK but you may have problems again
3) Ungraded full spline shaft - Pretty good
4) Rebuilt tranny - while more money, may be the best route especially if you have lots of miles on your current trans.

Re:OH CRAP!!!
Farmboy, sorry to hear about your bad luck. I owened a '95 and had the exact thing happen around 50K miles. I put the updated nut kit on because it was the cheapest way out and it lasted another 30 K--I sold the truck and don't know what happened after that..
The above info is good and if money is no object I would choose the latter. I was limited at the time and couldn't do it the right way.

Re:OH CRAP!!!
I've had thr updated nut in mine for 50k miles and i work mine hard.
I've fixed several others this way also and have had none to come back apart yet.
The fully splined shaft is prob. better but alot more bucks.
If you fix it yourself with updated nut leave the tranny in the truck because it takes 300 ft lbs. of tq.
It also takes a special wrench but if you know someone at a DC dealer you may be able to borrow one.
Just follow the directions good.

Re:OH CRAP!!!
I am pretty mechanically inclined, so if I do this myself, I can leave the tranny in the truck right?? And where should I get the parts from for the lock nut fix? And where can I find instructions on this fix?? Unfortunatley money is an option...........I aint got alot of it. Last question for now, what is the liklihood that I did any damage to the rest of the tranny, and can I still drive it, tommorow is opening day deer season and I really dont want to miss it!!!! Thanks again Yall!

Re:OH CRAP!!!
Yes leave it in truck just seperate T-Case.
If you pull tranny it's a bear to hold to get 300 ft. lbs.[ been there ]
you can get updated nut from dealer quick if it's in stock.
About $50.
Or Piers and others have them maybe cheaper.
Instructions will be with it.
Also change your tranny fluid while your there.
And it requires synthetic from factory.
I doubt if you did any more damage.
As the nut stays on shaft and gear just slides back.
Oil is not driver from there.
If left to long you will wear the threads down.
I drove one daily for 6 weeks before fixing once.
All though I don't recomend waiting that long.
But if going hunting localy I wouldn't miss that because of it either. ;D
Good Luck !
with the tranny and hunting ;D
