New Starter not working

Had a new/rebuilt NAPA starter put in last week.
Just went out to go somewhere and truck won't start.
Battery voltage 12.78 at the battery terminal. Does not drop.
I can hear a relay click when I depress the clutch and the key is in start position, but the starter won't roll over at all, and no voltage drop, so obviously no current being drawn at all.
I tried shorting directly from large post to small right on the starter and it only clicked once, and the starter did not kick in or run.

I'm about 100 miles away from my mechanic and need to get this thing running.
It sure is pointing to a bad starter.
I wonder if there is anything else I might check?

Common story with auto parts Chinese starters.
If you can, get your money back and buy an OEM

Double check all your bolts and look at the wires. I've seen them get put in the wrong place or not at all...everyones human. Also check your fuses and relays. If no luck there your probably correct.

Thanks, Bill.
Well, if I can get started somehow, I'll go back to Phoenix where I can get an OEM installed. Need someone with a "tank" to push me.

Silly question - have you tried tapping (hard) on the side of the starter? My "new" one from O-rielie's did that a few times, just gave it a few well placed jolts with a hammer (don't "beat" it, though) and it turned over as if nothing had happened. Probably selonoid hanging up. Also it seems with this starter, I have to be very dilligant to have the clutch all the way pushed in before I even turn the key - maybe something is interfereing with the clutch-start switch?

Check your battery cable grounds on the engine and frame, and have your batteries load tested.

It turned out to be a defective starter. That was under warrantee.
But, unfortunately, the ring gear/flywheel lost some teeth, which destroyed the starter gear, which took out more teeth of the ring gear, and some clutch springs are broken, which should never happen. Its a South Bend clutch, so a new flywheel is on the way. This sounds expensive!

I have a 2000 w/6 speed and was experiencing the same issues. My problem was a 20 amp starter solenoid fuse under the hood which cured the problem and allowed the truck to start.

Or as 96 12V stated, there is a clutch switch that won't allow the truck to start either unless it is depressed. That switch is spendy at about $100.00. Good luck.

Where are you at right now? I have a stock flexplate I'd give you if they are interchangeable. Not sure if our trucks are the same there...

Is this located in the fuse box or is it inline?
I made it back home from El Paso but stuck trying to get mine to start...new starter and all. I don't think it would be the key switch as that is only mechanical...correct?
See the "Stuck in El Paso" thread in the Help section. Thank you.
