Need help for neighbor's Ford

The truck is an '04 Powerstroke 6.0 Auto tranny, 4X4, Harley Davidson Edition.

It ran this morning OK, but now it won't start. The engine turns over, but just cranks, will not start. The glow-plug light will not come on on the dash. We have swapped relays and checked fuses, and still no start. We think it is the glow-plug module, but not sure. He is not very mechanical, and I know nothing about Powerstrokes. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not a power stroker, I'm one of those nasty "C" word guys. But I would see if the fuel soleniod is clicking & opening, Also I believe this is electronic injection, and that I am lost at this time. But I would check my fuel filters for contamination (water or clog) and when was the last time they were changed?
Hope this helps.
Happy Truck'n

If you are in Arizona this time of year I believe you can rule out glow plugs. Most diesels will crank fine in those temps without glow plugs coming on. Some of the diesel guru's hopefully will chime in, but I believe you are looking at some type of fuel issue.

While it's cranking, does it smoke white out of the tailpipe?

Thanks everybody. He picked up some new fuel filters today. Said he couldn't remember the last time they were changed. We will drop them in in the morning and see what happens.

stab in the dark

try a different key, I know it sounds funny, but once the sentry key is out, it will not start. just a guess, for me it was a $350 dealer charged me the labor, the key, and a charge i think

Maybe the relay for his fuel pump went out?

Any updates on your issue yet? We have several 02 powerstrokes that somehow managed to stretch the harness/wires under the valve cover and caused injectors to not function properly. A $2 triangular piece of plastic fixed it. That was a gradual issue though.

As silly as this sounds, try changing the oil. The injectors use oil pressure to fire and if its really dirty it won't start... (boy, thats a good design...)

All of the mechanics he talks to tell him it is the glow plug module, or the glow plug relay. He checked the relay connections and they are clean, no corrosion. One of the mechanics is sending him a glowplug module. Apparently, on a 6.0, if the module is bad, it will not start, even if it is 90 degrees outside..

Time will tell.

Thanks for your input folks.

Edit: Just as I posted this, he knocked on my door to borrow my tools. He had found someone to come by with a scantool, and there were no codes. We unhooked both negative terminals from the batteries and cleaned them, waited 10 minutes for the computer to reset, and the truck fired right up!!!

Thanks again...
