The line at the back of the head is the injector return fuel line. It connects to the injector pump return fuel line and returns fuel back to the fuel tank.

So that is where the extra fuel was going in between starts... it was leaking out causing the engine to have to re-prime so the injectors would fire!?!?

Sounds reasonable, if fuel can leak out with the motor running, I believe air could leak in with gravity pulling fuel out and the leak now venting. You might tighten it back up and see what happens.
