major fuel leak
Hey guys, last night I started smelling diesel so I puled into a parking lot to check it out and I had a steady stream of fuel running down like a waterfall .It was dark and I didnt have a flashlight but the best I could tell it was coming from behind the engine. I talked to the mechanic that towed it today and he thinks its the injecter pump, he is sending it to a diesel garage tommorow for a second opinion. My question is can the pump be going out or leaking that bad and never show a sign? The truck was running and idling fine even with the fuel leak and I hadnt noticed any loss of power. ???Tell me what you think.
Thanks, Steve

Re:major fuel leak
For what it is worth I just had my lift pump replaced. It was running fuel out of it at a pretty good stream, the funny thing was my pressures where good.

Re:major fuel leak
I have had a few large underhood leaks.
If you have had the injection pump replaced before, or alot of work done on the drivers side of the motor, it could have been pressed up against, and stressed, and with engine and injection pump vibrations developed a small leak, which will quickly turn into a huge leak. My truck didn't have many symptoms, had good fuel pressure, and good power. Only thing that gave me a hint something was wrong was the huge fuel leak (100 miles on a tank), the smell, an undercarriage, and tailgate soaked in diesel fuel, and a hard start, unless I primed the truck once.
I'd check the return line, the line, and "T" that is at the back of the head. There are 5 connections on the return line that could give you problems, and one bracket that might be suspect if it lost it's rubber shroud/shield. There are also 4 connections on the feed line that could be suspect.
I don't think it's an injection pump. If you/they think it is the inj. pump, then be sure to get two mechanics to verify that it is the pump.

Hello, srowen rule out the return line and the fittings like mcummins stated before they take off the pump if you can stop the mech. in time. You should rule out every option first, goodluck Rick

I agree. 9 times out of 10 it's just the rubber return hose that runs down the back of the engine. It gets weathered and full of pinholes.

Re:major fuel leak
It could be the rubber lines from tank to and from pump.
But it's prob. the lift pump not the inj. pump.
It also could be the WIF sensor in the bottom of the filter.
You said it was at the back of the engine so that pretty much rules out the inj. pump.
The P-Pump on the 2nd gen 12v are pretty much bullit proof.

Re:major fuel leak
Thanks for the imput guys, just curious, if an injection pump is leaking does that mean it needs replacing or can it be repared? I called the local dodge dealership today and he said a new pump ran around 4,000 bucks and 2,700 for a remanufactured and I thought oil changes were expensive ;D

Hey srowen,it sounds like to me that it would be in your best interest to get your truck home and look it over yourself if you are mech. inclined in some form or fashion.I have seen some bad situations come from dealers with these dodges. There is a lot of things that a mildly mech.ability guy can do to repair his own truck and save your self and your family some hard earned money. Goodluck Rick
