lost 5th gear. going on a trip need truck

I lost 5th in the truck and in a couple days, going away on a sled trip. I did some reading about a new gear and shaft but not clear as to who makes the best and where to order it. How long does it take to do this and is there any special equip/tools needed. It is possible to use a friends truck if this is going to take a while to fix. Also wondering if there is a different trany to put in instead. The truck is a 98 2500 285600 kms on it, I have edge juice W/ attitude, edge stage 2 injectors and a 24 foot x 8.5 foot enclosed trailer to tow. Thanks in advance.

thanks for the site I'll have a look at it. Is it possible to drive the truck into town and on short trips or is it best to just leave it parked?

Oh you can drive it just fine in 4th. the gear just free wheels there. won't hurt a thing. I pulled about 2000 miles on a road trip through the mountains in 4th after I lost my 5th gear nut.

I drove about 1800 miles, at least half of it towing before I got around to fixing mine.
The quad 4x4 is the only fix that lasts.

The fully splined shaft and gear that Standard Transmission in Ft. Worth sells works just as well Bill.
