I hate to guess and have you totally ruin it.
is there a feeling of it shifting in 3rd and 4th?
if not it sounds like you may have broken the pin in the shift collar or fork.
IF that is the case you should be able to drive it.
I just looked it up and they share the same fork and rail.
I don't think a transmission can be in two gears at once.

edit I thought you were on the road.
check your shifter also.

I think m-man is on track. 3rd gear is on the countershaft along with 1st and 2nd, while 4th gear is direct drive so you hav'nt broken a shaft. Somehow your shifter has disengaged the 3-4 gate. There are two types of shifters on the 4500, round top and square. You need to pull the shift lever off to see what is wrong.

thanks guys.. i made it home safely and no further damage to the tranny . when i got home i dug into it and found that it has the square type of shift . i also could not see anything that looked to be obviously broken. i manualy shifted it in and out of third and fourth gear w out the shifter on. ( granted not safe but if i die in my truck i die happy) it just acts like it is in stuck in N. no grinding no growl. is it a shift fork or pin ??? ( oh ya, i tether my blackberry to my laptop and get internet anywhere my phone works) hard to type and drive though ha ha ha
