Lacks power and blows white smoke
Please help, I'm a new member to the site, but have done reading thru a friends account in the past. My 2001 started acting up today, while going down the road at about 20 mph felt like the engine missed fired. The turbo doesn't want to spoll up above 15 psi and at times didn't go above 5 psi.. While at a dead stop and press on the gas a big cloud of white smoke comes out the tail pipe. On my way home the truck didn't want to accelerate at times, and at other times it acted just fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

taking your truck to the dealer to get the codes read is the best thing you can do. but if you want, try checking the codes by your odometer.
turn the key on, then off, then on, then off, then on! leave the key in the on position and watch the odometer for codes. the odometer will cycle 2 sets of codes, you will probably see p 1693 and p 0216. let the odometer cycle all the way. maybe up to 2 minutes. good luck.
my 2001 just had a lift pump and injection pump warrantied. check your warranty dates. mine runs till may 31 or 100,000 miles.

Thanks. Did the key for the codes, came up with a P PCU, then P 1693, a P 0216 and a P ECU. What do all the codes mean. This is my first diesel truck, and still trying to learn.

i believe that p1693 is a companion code. meaning it is just saying that anothe rcode exist and the p0216 is the injection pump code meaning timing failure on the injection pump.
i just learned this myself this year. if i am wrong someone here will surely correct me.
time to check warranty dates. good luck

Thanks. To bad I just went out of warrenty. Go figure, finally get the truck paid for as I go over 100,000 on it.
Is the VP something that a backyard mech can replace? Hate giving the dealer money for them to really do nothing.

I'm a newbie here but wanted to add my 2cents. My 2002 is experiencing the same trouble, only intermittently, and only while cold. I have scanned the computer and come up with the same code, P0216. I believe my problem to be related to the cold start cycle, because if I shut the truck off and restart, it runs fine. I have just bought the truck and am having body work done, and when its finished I plan on taking the truck to a mechanic to discover what is causing the issue. By the way, my scanner is unable to clear the code. So I hope this helps bubba with his issue.

hate to be the bearer of bad news but, white smoke.....low power.....engine missed are all signs of a smoked vp44....PO216 just confirms it..sorry. If you are mecanically competent and have tools you can do a pump swap easy enough, use the search feature and you can decide for yourself.

Took the truck in yesterday, and the lift pump was dead, and the VP44 is on the way out. With the new lift pump the truck was responding better, but not as good as it did. Also installed the fuel pressure gauge to make sure that I don't run around with another dead lift pump.
Thank you all for the help. I'll let you know how the vp44 install goes once I get it.

Installed a new injection pump yesterday. Took about 8-10 hours, had trouble getting the high pressure fuel lines off the injectors so had to do one at a time so not to damage the other lines. Truck is running good now, almost as good as normal. Fuel pressure is at 14 idle and about 12 when you get on it.
