Intermitant power loss with smoke
My boss just took me for a ride in his 2000 CTD so that I could observe what he described as extreme power loss and excessive smoke. During our ride the truck ran fine. Therefore, his problem is intermittent. I had him further describe the problem. He said it runs smooth at idle, but under load he had trouble even getting the truck over 25mph and there was tons of smoke.
The conditions were: The truck has sat overnight, and then it acted up immediately as he pulled out of his driveway in the morning. He drove into work (towing a boat). He shifted into neutral and shut the motor off, then restarted it and shifted into drive (never stopping). For about five seconds it had normal power, but then acted up again. The truck sat about four hours before he took me for a ride. During our ride it ran great.
Any ideas?
[undecided] Friends 12 valve did the same thing. Changed the fuel filter and problem solved. Moral of the story check the simple things first. (He couldnt remember when he had changed the fuel filter last.)

Gary-Kj6Q, 24 Valve. BTW are you a HAM (Kc7ksi)

wannadiesel, Very dark smoke.

David Gardner, Would a fuel filter produce such a intermitant problem? I'd suspect it to be more consistant (either plugged or not plugged). In any case, I'll ask him when it was changed last.
