Exclamation HELP! Stranded PO 148 code

Help. I'm stuck in South Charleston WV. I developed a MAJOR fuel leak after 2 hours on the 77 turnpike. Fuel is spraying near the rear of the block, but it's spraying so hard I cant pinpoint the location. So much fuel coming out my clutch started slipping. I limped it into a local dealer, White Dodge of South Charleston, to diagnose. I really dont have the extra cash to pay a dealer, so if anyone can point me in the right direction Iwould appreciate it. It's only spraying when running. It does not spray when the lift pump is running when the key is in the ON position. Thanks in advance.

Jamie

I will assume it is a 3rd gen in which case it is most likely #4 injection line and it should be covered under the Cummins engine warranty

148 code...don't see it in my 01 service manual, but looked it up on website and its a "fuel delivery error" http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_t...el_error_codes

Sounds like your fuel return line has worn a hole or has come apart; this is right at the back of the block, drivers side.

Why would it be the #4 injector line? I'm in the dark. Is that line issue common? Another post also said the return line may have worn through.

Thanks guy's. Just heard from the dealer, and guess what....................#4 injector line wore through! Their overnighting the part in to repair. If this is so common, why is there not a TSB or recall. I mean, its fairly dangerous. When it blew, it absolutely coated the entire engine compartment, the entire undercarrage and the rear of the truck with fuel. Combined with a 1200 degree garrett under the hood should = fire. Now how do I clean all the diesel off of the undercarraige?

Don't worry about it. You now have a well lubed chassis and everything is nice and shiny. To top it off you get to smell the wonderful aroma of diesel all the time. Lucky guy!!!!!!

Just kidding. Glad you got it fixed. Hopefully the dealer can at least powerwash the underside of the truck to get some of the fuel off of it. If not, then that would be my first stop after leaving the dealership.....

What's the line contacting that causes it to wear thru? What's the fix to prevent the problem BEFORE it happens?

From what I have been told, there is a blue isolator the line runs through. The bolt either loosens, or vibrates out causing the line to be able to no longer be isolated (or secured) and bam.

Glad you got the issue figured out LOWTYD!!

And while I appreciate A.D.'s comment, it would be good to know for sure what we need to check and fix to make sure we don't end up like LOWTYD.
I'll be looking for the #4 injector line and a blue isolator this weekend to see if everythings secure.

I went back over to the dealership today to look at it. The blue isolator is in place as is the bolt that holds it. I guess its just loose. I'll post again tomorrow after I have the injector line in hand. I couldn't see a hole in it from my position. I am worried about everything being saturated with diesel though. I mean everything under the hood got drenched. Do you guy's think I'll have any problems?
