The engine keeps shutting down and the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT does not come on.

I am thinking fuel filter or maybe cam shaft sensor? If cam shaft sensor, does anyone have a how to?

Started a few days ago with just one shutdown, yesterday drove about 20 miles and it shut down about 10 times, drove another 25 miles no problems. About an hour later I go to start the engine and it starts for about 10 seconds, then total shutdown...this time took about 1/2 hour to restart. Drove 2 miles and it shutdown 4 more times.

That sounds like the lift pump. Do you have a FP guage?

Do you still have the stock canister mounted fuel pump? Those were terrible about going out.

Do you have any codes?

Your best solution is to get it scanned and look at all the codes to determine the source of the problem. Even though the CEL does not light up, there will be codes present whenever the engine shuts down with the key still on.

Also, check your key fob. If you run with a big hog of keys on a ring, the problem is likely a failing key switch. They only like two keys and the remote or start having problems after a few years.

I haven't had time to checked the codes yet, but plan on doing so this weekend. I still have the stock canister mounted fuel pump, but when I called the dealer they tell me they only sell a lift pump conversion kit that sells for $ 400.00 and is a lengthy project to replace. Does this sound right?

Yeah, that sounds about right. You can go with an Air Dog for a little more than that and do it yourself. If you are staying stock with the truck, the in tank pump will work.

You can check the codes yourself with the key method in the link I posted earlier...

If all the afore mentions things don't come up with a solution it could be your injectors. Mine started to die on my frequently before I had them rebuilt. Also I have heard a bad pressure relief valve and cause it as well. It will randomly drop all the pressure on the rail. If lift pump I would recommend an Air Dog or FASS with a 2 micron filter. Insurance for the injectors and IP.

Here is the Error Code P0628 - Fuel Pump Relay Control Circuit Malfunction. Does this mean I will have to replace the entire pump or can you replace the relay only?

stock lift pump is at the back of the fuel filter housing, real tight space in there, get a look at it and see, but ya might be better off removing front drivers side tire, and wheel well liner for access. I think genos garage has the replacement for about 180 iirc.

$15.00 my rump......closer to $200.00. Wish it was $15.00. $400.00 for an in tank retro kit.

that is the location of the pump, if yours is stock, with that many miles on it, I would not leave it on my truck even if it does run after replacing the relay, or the pump will strand ya down the road.

Thanks for all of the input; anyone know where the relay is located? I can’t find anything on its location. Also, can the stock canister pump be replaced or does it have to be converted to an in tank system? How technical is the Airdog system? Any install or location info is appreciated. Just trying to get her back on the road within budget. Thank you.

I would bet it is in the fuse box under the hood, they are all labled.
