first gen flex plate

for the last few 100 miles Ive noticed a noise and feeling thru the floor board when idleing in park. Eventually I pulled the inspection cover off the trans to see the converter and flexplate, Not good, I see metal shavings from the flex plate rubbing on the block. I can use a pry bar and eaisly make the flexplate and converter move back and forth about 1/4". Im assuming the flexplate is comming apart or unbolted? Stupid question ,its far to the local shop, a tow will cost a bunch, will this come apart and take out the trans or??. are there any upgraded flexplates avaliable?? this will be the second time the trans is out in 110k. This is getting expensive.
Thank You for any info on this problem. 93 CTD, 518 trans.
Apache.

Re:first gen flex plate

I have had two differant vehicles with flexplate problems. Both times I was able to get ahold of flexplates from junkyards, but, I don't know if you will be that lucky. All I had to do was unbolt the tranny (one was 4wd, one 2wd) and slide it back about 6"and I could change the plates. One plate came out in two pieces. I don't know if there is any kind of aftermarket flexplate available or not. Maybe someone from the First Gen board can help you there.
BTW Welcome to the board!!!

Re:first gen flex plate

there isn't an after market flexplate buy guys are using the flexplate from early 12v's 94 to 97 I believe, 3946161 is the part number from Cummins they are available there cheaper than the dealer. Call Bob or Mark at Piers and they'll give you a bunch of good information and might know of a cheaper one or a better one, both of them are first gen owners.

Re:first gen flex plate

If you can help it I would not drive it. I would be worried about messing up the crank. I am not saying it would, but I think it could hurt it. From what I have read the second gen flexplate is stronger than the first gen ones.
