I'm like most of the responders above - tighten till it contacts the gasket (actually just a little beyond "just contacts") then crank it about 1/2 to 3/4 turn with a filter strap wrench. I've never had a filter fail in use or been too difficult to remove following this method.

As to quick-lube outfits, I've sworn off ever using them after too many problems arising due to their not doing things right. The last time was when my daughter took her Grand Cherokee in for oil change and the tech broke the oil pressure sending unit off at the base and either never knew it or didn't own up to it before she drove off. She called me right after saying it was really smoking a lot and asked what to do. Fortunately she didn't drive it far and was at home then. I checked the oil level and found it was over 4 qts low - only holds a little under 6 with a filter change too. We took it back to quick-lube and they finally discovered their mistake and got a new sending unit installed pronto. They were extremely lucky the engine didn't completely run dry and burn up as they'd have bought her a new engine for sure.

I've also had those places install filters too tight. Once when changing oil on one of our vehicles I had to use a strap wrench on the filter and almost didn't get it off. It was buckling from the torque I had to put on it before it finally did come off. So no more of that for me.

Anyway, that's mt story and I'm stickin' to it.

Steve
