Do I need service or am I being paranoid?

Do I need service or am I being paranoid?
: I did a search on this, I know the info is here somewhere but it is eluding me.

I had to take a trip to the Ft Lauderdale this past weekend. (Not towing) Had to make a slow crawl in 90 degree temps down hiway 441. My EGT temp rose to just below 180. I have driven my truck for a year and a half and my gauge has never gone but a little past 150. I live on the SW coast of FL and it gets hot here too. I have towed my 5th wheel in slow traffic and hot weather and never had the gauge go this high.

The bottom line is my concern is that since it has always consitantly remained at 150 in all previous situtations, should I be concerned. On the return trip (240 miles) The gauge stayed at 150 going about 65 mph and did not heat up but a fraction over 150 at idle.

I have to make this trip again on Friday and am just wondering if I should have this checked at the Dodge dealer before I leave.

Oh, yeah for a little chuckle. I stopped in at the local Dodge service (in Ft Laud) on Sat morning just to ask what they might think. When I told Service tech that my Pyrometer gauge was reading higher than nomoral and explained my experience....he said...."It's probably your Theromstat."

Sorry Ladyram, I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. My
pyrometer (EGT) reads in the hundreds. Maybe you have the engine
temp gauge and pyrometer mixed up? In any event, if you are talking
about the engine temp going up to 180, that is fine. If things get too
hot, you will hear the fan clutch engage, and you'll get a loud roar from
under the hood until it cools off some. I don't think you have anything
to worry about.

OK, Stupid mistake. Not the pyrometer. The Trans Temp gauge. A big..... Duh?

I'm making these trips because my mother had a stroke and I'm trying to line up Hospice care and I guess I'm on overload. I don't need problems with LadyRam right now and thanks for letting me know 180 is OK. I had just driven the 240 miles over and then the stop and go traffic just heated her up a bit more than I was used to.

Thanks.

Someone with an auto will hopefully respond and let you know what the
normal range for temperature should be. I have a manual, so don't know
what is normal or not. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

180* tranny temps aren't harmful.
Check the temp charts here:

When I was in Florida a couple of weeks ago, I would also see temps of 180 in traffic or just slow going. As soon as I got up to speed and locked up, all was normal.
Enjoy the weather!

Ok, now I feel better. When I was at my father's house I told him I was going to have to get him connected so I could contact this forum if I get to thinking LadyRam might be sick. ;D

Thanks!

Re:Do I need service or am I being paranoid?
That's really all it was; creeping along in traffic the heat of the engine is transfering to the tranny and the tranny fluid isn't being circulated as quick so it's not cooling the fluid temp like it does at hwy speeds.
Like it was already mentioned, the 190 isn't bad, but if you want to cool it down when you're in stop-and-go traffic.... put it in neutral and apply a little throttle; this circulates the fluid.

I if your tranny temp never gets over 190 degs that would be normal. At highway speeds for long periods it should approach that temp.

The time to be concerned about tranny temp is if there is a sudden rapid rise in temp. Start watching it closely if you see it above 215 degrees. Even then it is not in the danger zone, just that the higher the tranny temp the shorter the distance to danger. There is an idiot light for tranny temp that is set 250-260 degs. If that lights you have reached the danger zone, the point where things start to fry if not cooled immediately.
