DDP4's tons of white smoke/missing and wont rev

Here we go again!

Aside from the 6speed being POS (note to never get anything remotly related to pheonix remanufactured transmitions or off ebay, im a edit) The truck ran fine besides 3rd gear. The sps62 spooled up well and it was smooth and the clutch held and all. So I figured I'd put the ddp4's in. Did it the truck fired off fine and probbaly idled for 20min while we were looking for leaks and stuff. Then drove it around seemed ok. Today It was cool but not cold. 26 degrees. truck was pluged in for 30min even though it dosent need it. Fired it up just fine let it warm up for 3 min and went to drive it. It wouldnt rev at all above 2000 and anything above 1500-1700 it studders stumbles misses and puffs more weigh smoke then a frieght train, i couldnt even see behind me or get out of 2nd gear. I was told these injectors work well in cooler weather. Any ideas what the problem is?

Look for an obstruction of gunk in the fuel filter, the screen in the heater, or back in the tank pick-up screen. All it has to be is below freezing and the fuel will form ice and paraffin crystals and start to plug things if it is not treated.

Three gallons of kerosene in the tank and let it idle until the fuel temp is above freezing will likely solve the problem. You could use deicer, but with the alcohols now used in the new fuels I prefer kerosene.

Sounds like slipped timing - or just not enough timing.

i just checked the timeing. lift is at 5.15mm. According to a chart on dodgeram.org thats 14degrees. I'm told to run 16degrees (5.6mm lift). Do you think 2 degrees of timeing could cause all this trouble?

With bigger sticks and cold temps, it's a definite possibility.

ill try to move it and see how that goes. Hopefully I'm doing it correctly! haha. It sounds like basicly once I zero the indicator I roll the motor clockwise to the lift I want. remove the pump gear, roll the motor counterclock to TDC and reinstall the gear. That sound good?

That's right, except roll it back past TDC and come forward to TDC so you get all the lash out of the gear train.

does it matter if you break the freakin pin off for TDC? Is it going to screw up the engine or anything? Im just going to have to guess now where tdc is because ill me damned if im going through that whole other process.

the pin is plastic, it shouldn't hurt any thing....i had a 92 and the dealer broke it off doing an inj pump replacement. i didn't find out untill i adjusted the valves 50,000 miles later

Chris, use the valve drop method to find TDC precisely, otherwise you are wasting your time. It's more accurate than the TDC pin anyway.

Righto. It seems better now. It only stumbles above 2500rpm and only for the first mile or so then it ran ok. I guess thats just being cold. I'm not feeling the power I think it should have but I'm sure a #12 plate and my detuned AFC housing isnt helping any. I did wind the the turbo up to 45psi and barked it. whoops!
