Exclamation Cranks but won't fire!

Ok, here goes... While driving about 30 mph, the engine started lugging, like running out of fuel, dropped down to idle and no throttle response. Shut the truck down, and wouldn't start up again. Now then, fuel pressures are good, 12psi after the filter. Changed fuel filter, added 8 gallons of fresh fuel just incase the fuel gauge was lying to me. Bled lines to IP. Still no start. Cracked open injector lines and got fuel to them. Still no start. Got the frustration level peaked. No way of checking codes either. And to top everything else off, the batteries are just about dead because of all the cranking I've been doing. So I got them charging right now. Basically the engine will crank, but won't fire.

Any Ideas??

Thanks, Brent

It sounds like you just lost your injection pump. Were you getting a little dribble of fuel out of the IP lines or a good size stream?

It wasn't spraying out like I thought it would. I figured a HIGH PRESSURE line meant WATCH OUT YOU COULD GET HURT kinda pressure. But it wasn't just dribbling out either.

The pressure coming out of the injection pump is ~20-25,000 psi. It'll cut clear through your finger. Try and get the codes checked on it if you can.

Well I didn't open the injectors all the way.. Just cracked them open to bleed out any air.. and some fuel came out, but it wasn't squirting everywhere like I thought it would do. Just kinda bubbling out with a few squirts.

I am really thinking that it is the IP. I was kinda hoping that it wasn't. But everything is pointing that direction.

In a sick way, its kinda funny. Every single problem that others have had with the '99 Ram's. I have had... Including replacing a Lift Pump, Headlight switch, Rear Speed Sensor... and a few other items. I guess it was just a matter of time before the VP-44 took a dive.

I have some mechanics looking at it now, my frustration level was at its peak. I'll see what they have to say tomorrow.

BTW... This forum has been quite helpful in helping me locate all of the problems that I have had, and very very helpful in helping me to fix them. Keep up the good work, and helpful advice.

there is a chance you have a leak in the suction line. I saw this happen lat week, it was the rubber line from the LP to ff, check them all and look for any signs of fuel leakage, it may be only damp with diesel as it does not take much, the one I saw did not show signs of leakage but after the pumps quit I heard a slurp sound. good luck

Okay, got word back from the auto shop. The guy said that it was throwing all kinds of codes at him... he told me that they were pointing at the IP. I don't remember the codes that he said, he spouted off like 5 different codes while on the phone with me. Then he proceded to tell me that he contacted the Dealership to see how much the IP's go for from them... WOW, is all I can say. They said IP alone is about $2100!! I told him that I could most likely find a better price somewhere else. I know that I have seen on this site, someone saying something about one being $995 or somewhere around that?? Does anybody know off hand where this place is? Or maybe point a finger in the direction for me to follow?? I'm gonna go do some looking around the site, I think I remember where I saw it...

You should be able to find one for between $1000-1500. If it was me, I'd upgrade to the Hot Rod Vp44. Same price as a reman'd one, maybe a hair more, and you get a little extra power out of it.

Thanks for the info guys... Big Blue, what's a Hot Rod VP-44? I've been looking through this site for awhile and never heard mention of that. What's the difference between regular and hot rod? And is it more reliable? And would it help that I plan to add more power to the truck? In the form of a TST PM3. I know someone that will give me a good deal on one.

Thanks Brent.
