Crank: small cracks normal ???????
Heres the deal 2 years ago I rebuilt my engine on a tight budget because due to a loose oil filter i scuffed #6 wall. Anyway, I did not send the crank out to get tested. 15,000iles later i developed a sudden knock. Thought it was an injector, but it turned out to be a missing rod bearing.
Tore it all apart and took the crank and rods to engine builder. He rung tested the crank as good and sent it out to get spray welded on #6 journal. They did the work, then magnafluxed it and told him there was a crack in it. He informed me that I need a new crank. My truck has been sitting for about 6 months now because I didnt have extra $$ layin around.
Well.... I was talking to a guy the other day about it and he told me that some crankls come from the factory with very small cracks and that as long as it rings good all the way, use it. I mentioned this to my grandfather in law (who used to race Fords) and he said if it rings use it.
So now I dont know what to do. The builder says he will do whatever i want him too, but he wont be held responsible. (obviously)
Any knowledgable input greatly appreciated
Thanks, Dan

Not into a diesel engine that develops so much torque and certainly not into an expensive Cummins. A broken crank can make an awful mess not to mention the inconvenience if it happens beside the road in the middle of nowhere. It's much easier to fix it at this point in time. I should add there are stress fractures and there are cracks. If the Mag guy called it a crack it's probably a crack. There are other means of looking at the defect, Eddy Current and Xray. Magnaflux being reliable and inexpensive.
