Cool cold start stalling????

hello to all in forum.im new to this forum looks very good in here.i just bought a 98 ram 3500 dually 24 v. about 2 months ago everything was going good but when the temp dropped below 40 at night(im up in new england)when i go to start in morning starts right up rpms go up to 800 stays there for about 5 sec then stalls(tried to keep the rpms up with pedal but no use. seems like it wasnt getting any fuel)takes me about 3 times cranking it for 10 sec and foot to the floor and it starts up with a lot of white smoke from exhaust.it runs fine the rest of the day as long as i dont let it sit for more than 4-5 hours(below 40-50 degrees outside)(starts fine in warm weather)since this is my first diesel im kinda stumpped here.any info would be appreciated. thanks mark

check your lift pump and try adding an anti jell to you fuel and see if that clears it up. also check your fuel filter for clogging and that the cap is on tight. it may be loose and letting air in.

could be a leaking injector as well. also check to see that your grid heater is working

1. check fuel lines, replace. (they can leak air in without leaking fuel out).

2. check shut off solenoid for full travel.

3. overflow valve in pump.

this problem started in mine last fall. fuel lines seemed to be the culprit. as advised by infidel, i replaced them from the tank to the pump. about 13' of 3/8" and 13' of 5/16" DIESEL RATED MARINE fuel line.

good luck!

PM me for details.
