Code P0628 Lift pump failure?

Cruising on the freeway today unloaded and the truck dies...like a light switch was turned off, after getting it safely out of traffic it would restart only to die again seconds later. Called triple A and had it towed home and checked the codes, P0628 (low voltage at lift pump) comes up. It has 135,000 miles and has never had the lift pump replaced; how do I verify the LP failed and what are my options if it did fail? Do I just replace it or upgrade, if so to what?
Any help is appreciated!

I assume that you have the canister mounted pump. I'll post a pic for you when I get home, but if you take the driver side wheel well off, you can see the pump on the back of the FF canister.

Just turn the key on and listen by the driver side wheel. If you don't hear a steady hum, then it's toast. Super common, I'm surprised that you still have a stock one.

I just did a raptor 150 for this problem on one of my friends trucks, very easy to do. I'd go with that or an AD, easy install. I would not replace that pump, you'd have to get it from Geno's or Glacier, Dodge does not cary them anymore. They are not a smart design in the first place.

Yep...LP....either go with the Geno's replacement or after market (FASS, Airdog).

I got a new pump from napa for $180, 1.5 hours later and it is back on the road! I considered a hot rod after market LP but needed it repaired quicklyand cost effectively.
Thanks for the input, I needed a little validation on my suspicion.

If you got the OEM replacement, then you just put a bandaid on it. That lift pump on the canister is a bad design... save up for a Raptor or AD...

If that's the route of repair you are choosing buy another one and throw it under the seat. You'll be glad you did.

Man, I just got the warning light for the lift pump. Got the thing installed and the light stayed on. Stuck a gage on it and it was 0 lbs. Saved that butt. I believe I will take these guys advice and get an after market one. Glad I found this forum and I am a mechanic, but this is the first Dodge I have owned.

Yea, I agree. I am glad I found this forum and I work on this stuff every day. There is a lot of different ideas people have and I like comparing the different products people run on their trucks.

Question Two for one?

I am totally aware of this issue and as of right now I dont have any problems with the stock pump. But I was thinking about putting a t fitting on the injection pump and plumbing in an aftermarket kit, prolly airdog. Then put the stock on a manual switch. Should anything happen to one or the other I should have a back up. Prolly would have to include a ball vavle so the pressure would not bleed back through the system not being used. Would work for me cause the stock has not quit YET!!! Any comments on this idea?

Pump #?

I have little right around 109,000 on mine truck right now. I am not sure what pump # it is on cause I bought it with 84,000 on it. So I am looking to pick up an air dog kit here shortly.

Do the air dogs supposed to be a pump that will last? I am betting so but I had to ask. I am gonna look on the forum for airdog owners and see what they have to say. I use my truck to make my living so I need it to be reliable.

Question Fuel Sump

Has anyone on here tried this yet? Hellman Performance Stock fuel tank sump - $165.00. I am thinking about doing this with an air dog, putting a t fitting at the injection pump and keeping both systems on a manual swith an possibly putting a ball vavle on each line before injection as to not loose pressure back through the system I am not using. I know I prolly wont need a back up with the airdog, but if let the stock alone other then the switch and ball vavle seems to be a good way to keep an ace in the whole... Any comments? Questions or concerns? What you all think? Cut it apart so I dont have to go through with doing it...LOL
