Check engine light on and code P1693
I have a 2002 Dodge 3500 with the H/O Cummins, auto tranny. Today the check engine light came on and when I checked the codes it showed a P1693 code. Earlier this week it acted like it was missing slightly when cruising at a constant speed. I put injector cleaner in and it seemed to clear up for a day or two. Today it started missing again and the light came on. No problem with starting, idling or accelerating. Any ideas?

There are several things you might want to check. Do you have gages? What is your fuel pressure (post filter)? When was the fuel filter changed last? Have you tried the APPS reset? Hopefully it's not the VP$$ starting to go...

The fuel filter has less than 200 miles since changed. I think I saw an earlier posting on the APPS reset. I do not have a gauge but will get one this weekend and check it. If I remember an earlier posting correctly the pressure, post filter, should be 12-15 psi. Is this correct? If the pressure is not in that range is it definately a transfer pump or is there something else I should check?

Yes, 12 to 15 psi at idle is about right. It should never go below 7 psi at WOT. VP44's go bad sometimes for no apparent reason, but it is pretty well agreed to, by most, that low fuel pressure is a problem. It's cooled by the access fuel that goes through the pump. Fuel flow is the most important factor, but it seems that low pressure seems to be a good indicator. After my second lift pump, I went with the FASS II aftermarket system. Now, I have 19 psi at idle and never go below 16.
I was having the momentary dead pedal caused by the APPS. It got to where resetting it was only a temporary fix. I finally replaced it with a new one from Cummins. About $350, but much cheaper then from Dodge. You can find the reset procedure here .

HO's only came with 6 speed manual transmissions in 2002.
You either got snookered by the dealer, or snookered by the person you bought it from.
Other than that, welcome and hope you find the problem.
