changed fuel filter - no fuel at supply banjo

just changed fuel filter, filled with canister with diesel, and bumped the starter to let system prime numerous times. the first time it started and ran for a few seconds, then died. have been bumping ever since and finally proceeded to crack the banjo (while system is priming) and there is nothing coming out. whats next? i have to use the truck in a few hours. any help is appreciated.

thanks,

jeremy

edit - my sig isnt showing, this is on a 2000.

Sure sounds like your lift pump has died, just because you hear it doesn't mean it's pumping anything.

Only fix is a new one.

It's covered under warranty if you're under 100K miles and 5 or 7 years depending on the year of the truck

how would it just outright die from a filter change? ive been reading and i know they fail, but the truck has been running fine. why would a filter change do it in?

probably has been dead for a while but now the injection pump has lost its prime there is nothing putting fuel back up to the injection pump.

The VP44 can pump it's own fuel, if the system is primed and there is no air in the lines.

Once you break "prime" by changing the filter, the VP44 can't suck the fuel all the way from the tank by itself.

Lift pump serves two purposes, one to help the VP44 get the fuel from the tank,
and two to supply the VP44 with excess fuel for lubing and cooling the VP44.

Without a fuel pressure guage, this is usually the way someone finds out that the lift pump is dead,
or the VP44 dies from lack of lubrication and overheating.

Do you have any means of checking the fuel pressure??? ie fittings and pressure guage??

The filter change didn't kill it.
It's probably been dead for awhile.
The Injection Pump also has a smaller internal fuel pump that can pull enough fuel from the tank to make the truck run as long as it doesn't lose prime.
The Lift Pump provides the fuel to the IP to run, as well as an overabundance of fuel that the IP uses for cooling purposes that is returned to the tank.
When you opened the fuel system to change the filter, you introduced air into the system that the small pump alone can't purge.
It sounds like it's pump changing time.

www.hoeslidiesel.com is the cheapest place I've seen to buy a stock Cummins pump.
A full time fuel pressure gauge is a must for a 24 valve VP equiped Cummins.

looks like several people type faster than I do......

Oh ya, forgot the official Welcome!!.

Pamela Anderson , although I'd probably still look.

If needing the truck in an hour is a "do or die" situation, maybe there's a member close by that has a spare LP under the rear seat?

just my luck. i got the truck last a week and a half ago. i had noticed a stumble or two when i stomped it, so i went to change the filter. other funny thing is - i have a fuel pressure guage arriving in a day or two...this was going to be my first - er -second mod. ordered exhaust/intake and then the guage. about how long does it take you guys to change one out? id say my mechanical ability is pretty good.
