Burned up auto transmission

I have a 2000 dodge ram 3/4 ton, 24 valve cummins turbo diesel w/ an automatic transmission. At 40,000 mi. I had noticed it was popping in and out of overdrive. I took it in to a Chrysler dealership. They hooked it up to their computer, but could not get the truck to duplicate the problem because the problem would only occur when the truck was running for a good half hour at highway speeds. The dealer contacted chrysler for assistance. Chrysler recomended replacing the valve body. The dealer replaced the valve body and that seemed to fix the problem. 3,000 mi. later I was pulling my 28 foot 5th wheel trailer (app. 8,000lbs.) 20 min. in to the trip I noticed the truck was not shifting into overdrive (65 mph. flat surface highway) I then noticed a plume of smoke behind me. I let off the accelerator to pull over. At that point the engine stalled and then the tranny temp light came on. I checked under the hood and the tranny dip stick popped out a good 4 inches over a gallon of tranny fluid had blown out of the dip stick tube. I contacted Chrysler immediately for money assistance and they said since they had helped me money wise with the valve body that they would not help me with this problem. I then decided to take my truck to a tranny specialist shop. He was going to rebuild the tranny until he noticed that it got so hot it had melted everything.(tranny filter, washers, etc.) He said the torque got so hot that the paint had flaked right off it. He did not feel comfortable rebuilding a tranny with that much heat damage. So I had to order a new one. I would like to mention that after the valve body had been relaced and before the tranny burned up,I installed a Bully Dog Torque Dog computor chip adding 65hp. and 165ft.lbs. of torque. The tranny specialist does not believe the computor chip had anything to do with the tranny problem. He thinks this resulted from a bigger problem earlier that was only partially fixed by the dealership replacing the valve body. I don't know what to think. I don't know what caused either of the two problems. I'm just nervous what will happen after the new Chrysler tranny is installed and I put that computor chip back in Can I expect the same problems to reoccur?

Re:Burned up auto transmission

The tranny itself is $2,300. $2,850 installed. Tranny has already been shippedand will be installed this week. I thought of having the new tranny upgraded with after market parts but, that will increase the price plus the new 3 year/ 36,000mi. warranty that comes with the new tranny would be void.

Steve N.

Man, that truly sucks. You could not get an aftermarket tranny for that price, but you can get an aftermarket tranny that is practically bullet proof and has a 36/100K warranty on it.
As far as the new tranny is concerned, you should not be able to hurt it with the Torque Dog. Bigger boxes may hurt it though.

Chris
